Intro

In Koh Samui, the best resorts compete for the island's last private beaches, those that concrete has not yet won. We selected 10 addresses that keep their promises, from the north-west coast facing the Ang Thong marine park to the secret coves of Tongsai Bay. The overwater villas of Banyan Tree are fully booked six months before the high season, the Four Seasons keeps one of the rare beaches spared by construction, and the Conrad has placed its suites where the jungle descends to the rocks.

Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui

The Four Seasons has placed its villas on the north-west coast of Koh Samui, facing the Ang Thong marine national park, and holds one of the island's rare private beaches still spared by concrete.

The Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui occupies a wooded slope that descends to the sea, with 60 villas spread over seven hectares of tropical jungle. Each villa has a private infinity pool facing the Gulf of Thailand, teak terrace, outdoor shower in lava stone. We tested a Pool Villa of 165 m²: king-size bed facing the bay window, white marble bathroom, butler service included. The spa offers traditional Thai treatments in stilted pavilions, view over the canopy. The beach remains calm even in high season, shallow turquoise water over 50 metres, ideal for children. Garrya Tongsai Bay Samui

A 48-villa resort set on the most secret bay of Koh Samui, where we come to disappear.

The Garrya Tongsai Bay Samui occupies 25 hectares of gently sloping tropical jungle towards a private bay, in the north-east of the island. We sleep in teak and volcanic stone villas, scattered over three levels of vegetation, some with infinity pools facing the South China Sea. The materials are raw, the furniture contemporary Thai, the bathrooms open onto interior gardens. Two hillside pools, an 800 m² spa in the trees, a glass-walled fitness centre overlooking the canopy. Conrad Koh Samui

The Conrad has set its villas on the south-west tip of Koh Samui, where the jungle descends to the rocks and where we count the boats passing offshore.

The Conrad Koh Samui occupies a wooded promontory in the south-west of the island, accessible after twenty minutes of winding road from the airport. We stay in one of the 81 villas, all identical in principle: teak terrace, 10-metre infinity pool, sliding glass bay, king bed facing the sea. The interiors blend dark wood, grey volcanic stone, cream fabrics, subdued light even in broad daylight. The resort descends in tiers towards a small pebble beach accessible by funicular, the main pool sits mid-slope, the spa occupies a separate pavilion in the trees. From 768 € a night, we pay for the view and the isolation more than the service, correct without being memorable. The address suits couples seeking absolute calm, less so those who want to move around: Chaweng is 25 minutes away, Fisherman's Village 30 ✨

What makes this hotel unique

  • 81 villas with private infinity pool, minimum surface 100 m², all sea-facing
  • Private funicular linking the resort floors down to the pebble beach below
  • Spa in a separate pavilion in the jungle, traditional Thai treatments and outdoor cabins
  • Two restaurants on site: Jahn for Thai cuisine, Zest for grills and buffets
  • Free shuttle to Chaweng and Fisherman's Village, three departures per day

Wild Cottages Elephant Sanctuary Resort

A 5★ resort that places the elephants at the heart of the experience, between ethical sanctuary and tropical luxury.

Wild Cottages Elephant Sanctuary Resort occupies several hectares on the north coast of Koh Samui, ten minutes from Bo Phut. The concept rests on cohabitation between a sanctuary for rescued elephants and a resort of 18 teak-wood cottages, thatched roofs, private terraces overlooking the jungle or the enclosures. We tested the morning observation programme: bathing the pachyderms, meal preparation, veterinary explanations, all supervised without forced contact. The spa offers traditional Thai treatments in rooms open to the canopy, infinity pool facing the palms, restaurant serving Thai-Mediterranean fusion cuisine that is correct without being memorable. From 611 € per night, the rate includes unlimited access to the sanctuary and educational activities. We recommend it for the ethical approach, rare in the region, and the assumed nature immersion ✨

What makes this hotel unique

  • On-site elephant sanctuary, 8 rescued pachyderms, daily observation programmes included
  • 18 teak cottages with private terraces, jungle or enclosure views, air conditioning and fans
  • Spa with traditional Thai treatments, open-air massage rooms, 15 m infinity pool

The Library

The concept hotel that made Chaweng Beach a design destination, blood-red pool and minimalist library facing the Gulf of Thailand.

The Library has held the northern part of Chaweng Beach since 2005, white architecture signed Tirawan Songsawat, radical black-white-red interiors. We sleep in rooms of 46 to 92 m² with lacquered walls, low Japanese-style beds, black terrazzo bathtubs, wall libraries filled with art books. The red pool remains the focal point, surrounded by white sun loungers and an impeccable lawn, from 326 € the night. The service is discreet, never intrusive, the atmosphere adult and calm. The private beach is correct, beige sand, shallow waters, not the most beautiful on the island but sufficient. We come here for the aesthetic stance, not for the classic tropical postcard ✨

What makes this hotel unique

  • Red 40 m pool in Italian mosaic, second black infinity pool on the beach side
  • Rooms of 46 to 92 m² with wall libraries and black terrazzo bathtubs
  • Private beige-sand beach with sun loungers and included drinks service
  • Minimalist 2005 architecture by Tirawan Songsawat, strict black-white-red interiors

Everything to know

The complete guide to Koh Samui

Why Koh Samui is worth the detour for a palace stay

Koh Samui has escaped the overdevelopment that disfigured Phuket. The island retains quiet residential sectors, discreet former fishing villages, bays accessible only by private road. The Four Seasons occupies one of the last private beaches on the north-west coast, facing the Ang Thong marine national park. The Garrya Tongsai Bay stands in a secret cove, 25 minutes by winding road from the airport, no shops nearby. The Conrad chose the south-west tip, a sparsely built sector where boats passing offshore can be counted.

Most palaces offer villas with private pool, some on stilts as at the Banyan Tree Samui, others set on the rock facing the Gulf of Thailand. The white-sand beaches remain accessible, the waters calm, the jungle descends to the coast. Ethical elephant sanctuaries can be found (the Wild Cottages Elephant Sanctuary Resort places the pachyderms at the heart of the experience), world-class spas, Thai tables worth the detour.

Koh Samui international airport is 10-35 minutes from most resorts. No domestic flights, no seaplane transfers. Bags are dropped and one stays put. Rates rise between December and March, the rainy season runs from September to November, yet showers remain short and resorts apply 30 to 40 % reductions. Chaweng concentrates restaurants and bars, yet the best palaces stand at a distance, on calmer beaches.

When to go: seasonality and real climate

High season runs from December to March, dry period with temperatures between 28 and 32 °C. Resorts are fully booked from October for the year-end festivities, rates double, beaches fill up. February and March offer the best compromise: fewer people than in December-January, stable weather, calm sea for diving and snorkelling.

The shoulder season (April-May and June-August) sees temperatures climb to 35 °C, humidity rise, yet beaches remain usable. Rates drop 20 to 30 %, resorts are quieter. Beware of jellyfish between April and June on certain east-coast beaches.

The rainy season (September-November) brings short afternoon showers, rarely all day. Resorts apply their best rates, some close for renovation. The Four Seasons and the Conrad remain open year-round, with attractive spa and wellness offers. The sea may be choppy, diving less rewarding, yet the tropical gardens burst with greenery.

Where to stay: sectors to favour according to profile

Koh Samui divides into several zones, each with its character. Chaweng, the main seven-kilometre beach on the east coast, concentrates restaurants, bars, boutiques. The Library has placed its design concept there, blood-red pool facing the gulf. Lively atmosphere, sometimes noisy, yet everything is within walking distance. Good for those who want to go out in the evening without depending on a taxi.

Choengmon, to the north-east, remains residential and calm. The SALA Samui Choengmon Beach Resort occupies 69 villas with feet in the water, little-frequented beach, a few beach restaurants nearby. Airport 10 minutes, Chaweng 15 minutes by car. Ideal for couples seeking calm without total isolation.

The north-west coast (Angthong, Mae Nam) offers the most spectacular views, facing the Ang Thong marine park. The Four Seasons has settled there, private beach spared by concrete, residential sector without shops. Maenam keeps its fishing-village character, four-kilometre little-frequented beach, shallow waters. The Cape Beach Villa offers a private villa facing the gulf there, tailor-made service without the palace label.

The south-west coast (Taling Ngam, Lipa Noi) remains the most preserved. The Conrad dominates Taling Ngam point, jungle down to the rocks, view over the Ang Thong islands. Lipa Noi keeps its fishing-village calm, twenty minutes from the airport. The Ida B Domain Resort has placed its contemporary villa there, two pools, spa facing the gulf. Sectors for those who want to disappear.

Tongsai Bay, north-east coast, accessible only by private winding road. The Garrya holds 48 villas there, secret bay, no shops, 25 minutes from the airport. For travellers seeking absolute isolation.

Hua Thanon, fishing village on the south-east coast, remains authentic. The Anzhu Seamate Villa offers a private villa there, infinity pool, fifteen minutes from the airport. A few local restaurants, no nightlife.

  • Chaweng : animation, restaurants, nightlife, long but busy beach
  • Choengmon : residential calm, quiet beach, close to airport
  • North-west coast : views over Ang Thong, private beaches, relative isolation
  • South-west coast : most preserved sector, jungle, rocky coves
  • Tongsai Bay : total isolation, private road, secret bay
  • Hua Thanon : authentic village, calm, little touristy

Practical tips before booking

Reservation: the best resorts are fully booked six months before high season, especially for the year-end festivities. Booking direct via the hotel website often secures advantages (upgrade, spa credit, breakfast included). Platforms such as Booking or Agoda sometimes offer lower rates, yet without flexibility.

Transfers: Koh Samui international airport (USM) is served by Bangkok Airways (monopoly), Singapore Airlines, and a few low-cost carriers. Flights from Bangkok (1h), Singapore (2h), Hong Kong (3h). Resorts offer private shuttles, often included for top-end villas. Otherwise, fixed-rate taxis (30-60 € according to distance) or car rental at the airport.

Visa: visa exemption for French nationals up to 30 days (45 days since 2024, check updates). Passport valid six months after return date.

Health: no compulsory vaccines, yet recommended: hepatitis A and B, typhoid, Japanese encephalitis for long stays in rural areas. Mosquitoes present year-round, repellent essential. Tap water not drinkable, prefer bottled water. Resorts have infirmaries, private hospitals in Chaweng (Bangkok Hospital Samui).

Money: bank cards accepted everywhere in resorts and tourist restaurants. ATMs numerous (200 baht fee, i.e. 5 €, per withdrawal). Negotiate prices in markets and with taxis (fixed rates, no meter). Gratuity appreciated: 10 % in restaurants, 50-100 baht for drivers and guides.

Telephone and internet: resorts offer free wifi, often of good quality. Local SIM card (AIS, TrueMove) available at the airport, 10-20 € for 10-20 GB, 4G network covers the whole island.

Respect for customs: remove shoes before entering temples and certain houses. Shoulders and knees covered in places of worship. Never touch someone's head (sacred part of the body). Thais appreciate politeness and the smile, avoid raised voices.

Safety: Koh Samui remains safe, yet scooter thefts and pickpockets in tourist zones. Rent a safe in the villa. Beware of classic scams: taxis without meter that inflate prices, "damaged" jet-skis you are made to pay for. Always check condition before renting a vehicle and take photos.

In shoulder season (April-August), deduct 30 % on accommodation. Resorts like the Four Seasons or the Conrad run around 900-1800 € per night in high season, 500-1200 € in shoulder season.

Which area to choose for a first stay in Koh Samui?+

We recommend Choengmon (SALA Samui) or the north-west coast (Four Seasons) for a first stay: calm beaches, close to the airport (10-35 minutes), easy access to Chaweng for restaurants and nightlife. Avoid Chaweng if you seek calm, favour the south-west coast (Conrad, Ida B Domain) for total seclusion. Tongsai Bay (Garrya) suits repeat travellers who already know the island.

Are the palaces of Koh Samui suitable for families with children?+

Yes, most offer family villas, kids clubs and adapted activities. The Wild Cottages Elephant Sanctuary Resort places elephant interactions at the heart of the experience, SALA Samui offers shallow-water beaches ideal for children. The Four Seasons and the Conrad have youth programmes and babysitting. Avoid the Library (adult design concept) and the Garrya (total seclusion, no animation).

Do you need to rent a car or do the resorts organise transfers?+

The best resorts provide free shuttles to the main beaches and Fisherman's Village, plus airport transfers often included for top-tier villas. Renting a scooter (8-12 € per day) or a car (40-60 € per day) remains useful to explore the island at your own pace: Na Muang waterfalls, Secret Buddha Garden, night markets. Taxis apply fixed rates without a meter (15-35 € depending on distance), to negotiate before boarding.

What are the must-try restaurants outside the resorts?+

Zazen Restaurant at Fisherman's Village (Bo Phut) offers refined Thai cuisine, tables on the beach, romantic atmosphere, 35-70 € per person. The Larder in Chaweng serves Thai-Western fusion with organic produce, short menu that changes with the market. Tree Tops Sky Dining & Bar offers a panoramic bay view, ideal for sunset. The night markets of Chaweng and Lamai offer authentic street food at 3-5 € per dish.

Do rates vary greatly by season?+

Yes, the gaps are significant. A villa at the Four Seasons or the Conrad costs 900-1800 € per night in high season (December-March), 500-1200 € in shoulder season (April-August), 300-800 € in low season (September-November). Resorts apply 30 to 40 % discounts outside high season, with advantageous spa packages. Book six months ahead for high season, negotiate direct for perks (upgrade, spa credit).
