Why Hanoi deserves the detour in palace mode
The Vietnamese capital lines up five-stars at rates that defy all European logic. Le Champton charges 44 € a night, MAY DE VILLE 56 €, and these are real palaces with spa, rooftop and concierge service. The concentration of high-end addresses plays out over 500 square metres around lac Hoàn Kiếm, the historic and tourist heart of the city. Capella Hanoi, a Bill Bensley creation, has just earned a Michelin star for its table Hibana by Koki: the first time a Vietnamese hotel has reached this level of gastronomic recognition.
The Vieux Quartier des 36 corporations remains the epicentre of boutique hospitality. The boutique hotels occupy former trading houses, on rue Hàng Bông (the street of silk cushions) or rue Lô Sư (a quiet artery two steps from the temple Ngọc Sơn). We sleep 300 metres from the théâtre de marionnettes sur l'eau, five minutes on foot from cathédrale Saint-Joseph, with views of the red bridge The Huc from certain rooftops. The luxury offering has structured itself around three typologies: French colonial palaces (Grand Hotel du LAC, Sofitel Legend Metropole), contemporary design boutique hotels (Oriental Jade, GM Premium, Lucien), and wellness addresses that bet everything on the spa (Shining Central, Solare De Monte).
The value-for-money ratio remains unbeatable compared with neighbouring Asian capitals. Bangkok charges 200 € for an equivalent standing, Singapore 350 €. Here, 80 € suffice for a five-star with infinity pool, breakfast included and a 90-minute Balinese massage. Historic palaces such as the Sofitel Legend Metropole (opened in 1901) or the Grand Hotel du LAC (colonial façade on the east shore of the lake) offer a plunge into French Indochina without Parisian rates.
When to go: the climatic window to respect
Hanoi endures a humid subtropical climate with four marked seasons. October to April constitutes the optimal period for a palace stay, with temperatures between 15 and 25°C and a bearable humidity rate. March and April offer the best compromise: clear skies, moderate heat (22-28°C), flamboyant trees in bloom along the colonial avenues. Rates rise 30 % during Tết (lunar new year, late January-early February depending on the year): hotels are fully booked six weeks ahead, and some impose minimum stays of three nights.
May to September marks the hot and humid season. July-August combine 35°C, 85 % humidity and daily tropical downpours in late afternoon. The palaces compensate with slashed rates (up to 40 % reduction) and spa packages. Capella offers a three-night package with unlimited hammam access and two massages for 450 € in August, versus 780 € in November. November to February brings coolness: mornings drop to 12-15°C, mist envelops lac Hoàn Kiếm until 10 o'clock. We pack a jumper, rooftop terraces close after 22 hours.
| Month | Avg. temp. | Rain | Crowds | Palace rate |
|---|
| March-April | 22-28°C | Low | Medium | Standard |
| May-August | 30-35°C | Heavy | Low | -30 to -40 % |
| Sept-Nov | 24-29°C | Moderate | High | +20 % |
| Dec-Feb | 15-20°C | Low | Medium | Standard |
The summer monsoon (June-August) drowns the city under 300 mm monthly. The streets of the Vieux Quartier turn into rivers for two hours after each storm, scooters slalom between puddles. Hotels with direct car access (Anatole, MAY DE VILLE) become strategic. Museums and temples, however, remain practicable, and the post-rain light sublimates the colonial façades. If we accept two showers a day, we enjoy rates halved and a city emptied of tour groups.
Where to stay: breakdown by district and typology
District of Hoàn Kiếm concentrates 80 % of the luxury offering. Three micro-zones stand out:
Shores of lac Hoàn Kiếm (east bank): Grand Hotel du LAC (rue Nha Chung, 50 metres from the shore), La Siesta Premium Lakeside (rue Ba Trieu) and MAY DE VILLE (rue Gia Ngu) offer direct views over the lake and temple Ngọc Sơn. French colonial atmosphere, Art Deco façades, rooms with period parquet. Grand Hotel du LAC focuses on the spa (hammam, sauna, jacuzzi) and the heated indoor pool. La Siesta Premium seduces couples with its romantic suites (bathtub facing the lake, king-size bed, premium minibar included). MAY DE VILLE attracts families: connecting rooms, babysitting service, buffet breakfast until 11 o'clock. Rates: 56 to 120 € according to season.
Vieux Quartier des 36 corporations: Champton (rue Hang Bong, 300 metres from the lake), GM Premium (same street), Shining Central (rue Lô Sư) and Oriental Jade (rue Hang Trong) plunge into the mercantile bustle. Lacquer shops, art galleries, old-style cafés (cà phê trứng, coffee with beaten egg) on the ground floor. The hotels occupy tube buildings (4-metre façade, 20-metre depth, eight storeys). Systematic rooftops with infinity pool and 360° view over red-tiled roofs. Shining Central and Solare De Monte (rue Nguyen Sieu) excel on the wellness side: 200 m² spa, Balinese massage cabins, hammam, infrared sauna. Unbeatable rates: 44 € at Champton, 60 € at GM Premium.
Adjacent quiet alleys: Lucien Hanoi Lakeside (ngõ Cầu Gỗ, alley 150 metres from the lake) and Anatole (rue Nha Chung, pedestrian artery) deliver luxury without the noise. Contemporary façades, refined design, noble materials (teak wood, lava stone, linen). Lucien seduces romantics: suites with private terrace, island bathtub, lake view. Anatole displays a Franco-Vietnamese positioning (Indochina-inspired decoration, French wine list, rooftop pool with Fermob loungers). Rates: 75 to 110 €.
Capella Hanoi (rue Nha Chung, opposite the Opera) plays in another category: 47 suites from 45 to 180 m², theatrical decoration signed Bill Bensley (crystal chandeliers, hand-embroidered textiles, bespoke furniture), Michelin-starred table, Auriga spa with double cabins and Japanese bath. Rate: 380 € a night, breakfast and minibar included. We book for an occasion (honeymoon, birthday), not for a classic city break.
Tables and gastronomy: beyond the phở
Hanoi's culinary scene has exploded these last three years. Hibana by Koki (Capella Hanoi) earned Vietnam's first Michelin star in 2023: high-level Japanese cuisine (18-course omakase, 150 €), chef Hiroshi Yamaguchi trained in Tokyo and Kyoto. Reservation required three weeks ahead. Sofitel Legend Metropole houses Le Beaulieu, classic French table (pan-seared foie gras, wild turbot, Grand Marnier soufflé) in a Belle Époque chandeliered room. Six-course tasting menu at 95 €, wine pairing 60 €.
Boutique hotels bet on gastronomic rooftops. Diamond Sky Bar (GM Premium) proposes Viet-Mediterranean fusion tapas (black-sesame tuna tartare, local-vegetable tempura) with plunging lake views. The Rooftop (Lucien) serves signature cocktails (Thai-basil mojito, combava gin tonic) and a sharing-plates menu (revisited nems, lacquered-pork bao buns). Allow 40 € per person with drinks.
To taste real high-end street food, we step outside the hotels:
- Chả Cá Lã Vọng (14 Chả Cá): the institution of turmeric-and-dill grilled catfish, served on a table burner. 15 € per person, queue guaranteed after 19 hours.
- Bún Chả Hương Liên (24 Lê Văn Hưu): the rice vermicelli with grilled pork that Obama and Bourdain shared in 2016. 8 € the meal, modest setting but irreproachable flavours.
- Madame Hien (15 Chân Cầm): bourgeois Vietnamese cuisine in a renovated colonial house. Short menu (eight dishes), sourced produce, careful presentation. 35 € per person.
- La Badiane (10 Nam Ngư): Franco-Vietnamese table of chef Benjamin Rascalou, formerly of Le Meurice. Five-course tasting menu at 55 €, cellar of 200 references.
Hotels offer cooking classes: Sofitel Legend organises three-hour masterclasses (market + preparation + tasting, 85 € per person). We learn to roll nems, dose nuoc-mâm, prepare cà phê phin (Vietnamese filter coffee). Capella offers private workshops with the Hibana sous-chef (250 € for two, on reservation).
Experiences and activities: beyond the lake
lac Hoàn Kiếm can be walked in 45 minutes (1.8 km perimeter). Departure advised at 6 a.m. to meet Hanoians practising tai-chi and collective gymnastics. temple Ngọc Sơn (Jade Mountain temple) is reached via the red bridge The Huc: Sino-Vietnamese architecture, sanctuary dedicated to Trần Hưng Đạo (national hero of the 13th century), giant stuffed turtle (250 kg specimen caught in 1968). Entry 30 000 VND (1.20 €), open 7 h to 18 h.
Vieux Quartier des 36 corporations deserves half a day. Each street bears the name of the trade once practised there: Hàng Bạc (silver street, goldsmiths), Hàng Mã (votive-offerings street, gilded paper), Hàng Đào (silk street, fabrics). We stroll between the stalls, negotiate a lacquer painting (from 50 €), stop in an old-style café (Café Giảng, 39 Nguyễn Hữu Huân, for the cà phê trứng invented here in 1946). Hotels organise private walking tours with French-speaking guide (three hours, 60 € for two).
théâtre de marionnettes sur l'eau Thăng Long (57B Đinh Tiên Hoàng, north shore of the lake) offers daily shows at 17 h, 18 h 15, 19 h 30 and 20 h 45. Duration 50 minutes, VIP seats (first three rows) at 200 000 VND (8 €). Puppeteers manipulate the figures from a basin, live traditional orchestra. We reserve via hotel concierge to avoid the queue.
temple de la Littérature (Văn Miếu, 58 Quốc Tử Giám) lies 2.5 km west of lac Hoàn Kiếm. Vietnam's first university (founded 1070), Confucian architecture, stone steles on turtles (UNESCO-listed), frangipani gardens. Entry 30 000 VND, open 8 h to 17 h. Hotels offer private-car transfers (15 minutes, 10 € return) or cyclo (30 minutes, negotiate 5-6 € with the driver).
For a day escape, baie d'Halong terrestre (Ninh Bình) is reached in two hours by road. Concierges organise private excursions: pirogue through Tam Cốc caves, visit to Bích Động pagoda, lunch with a local family, return late afternoon. Rate: 180 € for two with driver and French-speaking guide. Capella and Sofitel Legend charter premium vehicles (Mercedes E-Class, water and snacks on board).
Realistic budget for three nights in palace mode
| Item | Low range | High range |
|---|
| Hotel (3 nights) | 130 € (Champton) | 1 140 € (Capella) |
| Restaurants | 90 € (street food + 1 table) | 300 € (3 gastronomic tables) |
| Airport transfers | 20 € (standard taxi R/T) | 80 € (private car R/T) |
| Activities | 50 € (temples + show) | 200 € (private Ninh Bình excursion) |
| Spa & massages | 40 € (1 massage 90 min) | 150 € (2 treatments + spa access) |
| TOTAL | 330 € | 1 870 € |
The low range remains accessible: 130 € for three nights at Champton (44 € a night, breakfast included), 30 € a day on street food and local cafés (phở 3 €, bánh mì 1.50 €, Bia Hơi beer 0.50 €), a decent table at 30 € in the evening (Madame Hien or equivalent). Grab taxi transfers cost 10 € from Noi Bai airport (35 km, 45 minutes), temples charge 1 to 2 € entry, a 90-minute massage in hotel spas runs around 40 €. We close a comfortable stay at 110 € per day for two.
The high range explodes with Capella (380 € a night, 1 140 € for three nights) and starred tables (Hibana at 150 € per person, Le Beaulieu at 95 €). Private-car transfers with English-speaking driver cost 40 € one way from the airport, tailor-made excursions 180 € a day, spa treatments at Capella or Sofitel Legend 120 € for 90 minutes. We easily reach 620 € per day for two in grand-luxe mode.
The majority of travellers position themselves between 200 and 350 € per day for two: boutique hotel at 80-100 € a night (Lucien, Anatole, La Siesta Premium), one gastronomic meal and one local meal per day, Grab taxis, one organised excursion, one massage. Hotels often include breakfast (continental buffet + hot Vietnamese dishes), saving 15 € per person.
International bank cards work everywhere in hotels and high-end restaurants. We keep cash (VND) for temples, taxis, tips. Vietcombank and BIDV ATMs accept Visa and Mastercard, 2 to 3 % commission per withdrawal. Hotels change euros and US dollars at a fair rate (1 to 2 % below interbank).
Practical tips before booking
Visa: French nationals benefit from visa exemption for stays of less than 45 days (single entry). Passport valid six months after return date mandatory. For longer stays or multiple entries, e-visa available on the official site (25 USD, issued in three working days).
Airport transfers: Noi Bai international airport lies 35 km north of Hanoi. Three options:
- Grab taxi (Vietnamese equivalent of Uber): 10-12 € to the Vieux Quartier, 45 minutes outside rush hour. App essential, cash or registered-card payment.
- Private car with driver: hotels offer this service between 30 and 50 € one way according to vehicle standing. Capella and Sofitel Legend send a German saloon with bottles of water and refreshing towels.
- Bus express 86: 1.50 €, departures every 20 minutes from 5 h to 22 h, stop in front of the Opera (10-minute walk to lac Hoàn Kiếm). Valid option for tight budgets, less so for a palace stay.
Traffic and movement: the Vieux Quartier is walked. To reach the temple de la Littérature, Ho Chi Minh mausoleum or Ethnography museum, we take a Grab taxi (3 to 5 € the ride) or rent a scooter (8 € per day, international licence theoretically obligatory, rarely checked in practice). Hotels offer free bicycles: romantic option but risky given scooter density (5 million in Hanoi).
Health: no compulsory vaccines. Update recommended for DTP, hepatitis A and B, typhoid. Tap water not drinkable, we buy bottles (hotels provide two free bottles per day). International pharmacies in the French quarter (rue Tràng Tiền): Guardian, Pharmacity. French-speaking hospital Vinmec International Hospital (458 Minh Khai, 24/7 emergencies, consultation 50 €).
Connectivity: wifi works everywhere in the hotels (correct speed, 20-50 Mbps). For a local SIM with unlimited data, Viettel counter at the airport: 10 € for 30 days, stable 4G. Useful for Grab, Google Maps, instant translation.
Tips: not obligatory but appreciated. 20 000 to 50 000 VND (0.80 to 2 €) for a baggage porter, 10 % in high-end restaurants if service not included, 50 000 VND for a taxi driver after a day excursion. Hotel spas include service, we leave 100 000 VND (4 €) directly to the practitioner if the massage was exceptional.
Reservation: the best hotels are fully booked six weeks before Tết and during October-November bridges. We book three months ahead to secure the desired room (lake view, high floor, suite). Flexible rates (free cancellation up to 48 h before) cost 10 to 15 % more than non-refundable rates, but the security is worth the investment. Booking sites (Booking, Agoda) sometimes display lower prices than the hotel's official site, especially off-season: we compare systematically ✨
