We recommend Villa Certosa to couples seeking Capri off-season or away from the summer crowds. It's an address for fortysomethings and up, late honeymoons, quiet retreats, Malaparte readers. Families with young children will steer clear: the access staircase and unsupervised pool are not suitable.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The villa dates from the 1920s, enlarged in the 1960s by a Neapolitan family. Typical white Capri architecture, barrel vaults, cascading terraces. Restrained interior: majolique floors, limewashed walls, wrought-iron and rattan furniture. The rooms are small but bright, shuttered windows, sea or garden view depending on the floor.

No on-site restaurant. Breakfast is taken on the terrace: focaccia, buffalo ricotta, homemade jams, Neapolitan coffee. Room service offers cold plates until 10pm (burrata, charcuterie, salads). For dinner, we head down to Capri centro (10 minutes) or book a table in Anacapri.

Where the hotel sits in Capri
Villa Certosa stands on the heights of the Certosa di San Giacomo, halfway between the port and Anacapri. The Piazzetta is ten minutes' walk via the staircase, fifteen by road. The neighbourhood is residential, silent after 8pm, no shops or restaurants nearby. Private shuttle to the port on request, but we advise walking: the view of Marina Piccola bay justifies the climb.
