The last vertical palace on the Amalfi Coast, carved into the cliff above a private cove.
Il San Pietro di Positano
From
4,337 €
“Rock-hewn lift that descends 60 metres to the pebble beach and private nautical club.”
Il San Pietro di Positano clings to the Laurito cliff, two kilometres south of the centre, in a verticality that defies ordinary urban planning. We reach the rooms via staircases carved into the rock, suspended terraces, flower-decked walkways of bougainvillea and lemon trees. The infinity pool overlooks 80 metres of sheer drop before the Mediterranean, the bar serves spritzes facing the sunset over Capri. The 57 rooms blend Vietri majolica, wrought-iron beds, local marble bathrooms, all with private balcony or terrace overlooking the sea. Service remains family-run, the house has belonged to the Cinque family since 1970, we bump into Carlo Cinque at breakfast. From 4 337 € per night, a rate that reflects the site's exclusivity and the scarcity of availability (book six months ahead for July-August). It's Positano's most spectacular palace, the one that justifies the trip ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend Il San Pietro to couples seeking vertical seclusion and willing to pay for the geography. It's an address for honeymoons, wedding anniversaries, romantic retreats where one doesn't leave the hotel for three days. Families with children over 12 find their place here, but the topography (stairs, steep gradients) rules out pushchairs and requires a certain mobility.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The palace was built in 1970 by the Cinque family on land reputed unbuildable, with exceptional permits. White tiered architecture, inspired by Positano fishermen's houses, staggered over nine levels linked by lifts and stairs. Classic Mediterranean interiors: barrel vaults, majolica floors, Neapolitan 18th-century furniture, Vietri ceramics collections. Rooms measure between 35 and 90 m², all different, some with outdoor jacuzzi on the terrace.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The Zass has held a Michelin star since 2016, chef Alois Vanish's cuisine working products from the Sorrentine peninsula (Sorrento IGP lemons, Vesuvius tomatoes, Cetara fish). Breakfast served on the terrace until noon, continental buffet and hot menu. Bar Carlino open from 11am to midnight, classic cocktails and spritzes, view of Li Galli. 24/7 room service, full Zass menu available in room.

Location & access
Where the hotel sits in Positano
The hotel stands on Via Laurito, coastal road SP163, two kilometres south of Positano centro, before the Praiano hamlet. No shops within walking distance, the hotel shuttle reaches Positano in ten minutes (departures every 30 minutes from 8am to 11pm). Naples airport 65 km away, one and a half hours by road (private transfer included in some packages). The neighbourhood barely exists, it's the cliff, the road, the sea, isolation is part of the concept.
