Intro

In Taormina, the warm stone of the terraces holds the scent of the prickly pear until sunset, when Etna stands out in the distance against a pink background. We tested and cross-checked the ten addresses that keep their palace promises, between historic cliff and Mazzarò bay. We warn straight away: in August, even at 900 euros a night, we share Corso Umberto with half of Europe.

San Domenico Palace, Taormina, A Four Seasons Hotel

A 14th-century Dominican convent turned setting for season 2 of The White Lotus, suspended between the Ionian Sea and Etna.

The San Domenico Palace, Taormina, A Four Seasons Hotel occupies a former Dominican convent founded in 1374, converted into a hotel as early as 1896. We quickly recognise the place: it is the setting for season 2 of The White Lotus, largely filmed in its gardens and cloister. The vaulted corridors, restored frescoes and light stone arcades tell five centuries of Sicilian history, without artificial reconstruction. The rooms look out either over the Ionian Sea or Etna, often both at once from the upper terraces. Rates start at 2 190 € per night, which remains in the upper range of European Four Seasons. The spa and infinity pool overlook the bay of Naxos, a rare setting for a swim. We simply regret that the influx of curious visitors spotting the series sets can sometimes be heard even in the gardens 😌.

What makes this hotel unique

  • 15th-century Dominican cloister preserved at the heart of the hotel
  • Main setting for season 2 of The White Lotus (2022)
  • Infinity pool facing the bay of Naxos and Etna
  • Restaurant Principe Cerami, Sicilian cuisine by chef Massimo Mantarro
  • Airport shuttle available, Catania around 50 minutes

Grand Hotel Timeo, A Belmond Hotel, Taormina

The only hotel in Taormina literally pressed against the Teatro Greco, with Etna smoking in the background.

The Grand Hotel Timeo, A Belmond Hotel has occupied since 1873 the most enviable terrace in Taormina, pressed against the ancient Teatro Greco. Open the shutters and Etna smokes on the horizon, the bay of Naxos sparkles below. The pool, carved into the sloping garden, overlooks the Ionian Sea without any building coming between. The rooms blend colourful Sicilian fabrics and period furniture, some a little small for the rate requested. The spa remains modest in size but benefits from the same mineral silence as the rest of the property. Here, we pay mostly for the address and the history, Oscar Wilde and D.H. Lawrence slept here, more than the square metre surface, from 1 750 € a night. The positioning literally in the ruins of the Greek theatre remains the true luxury of the place, nothing else in Taormina has this proximity 😌.

What makes this hotel unique

  • Adjacent to the ancient Teatro Greco, 50 metres from the entrance
  • Outdoor pool overlooking the bay of Naxos and Etna
  • Booking score of 9.6/10 from 185 reviews, rare for a palace
  • Airport shuttle included, useful as Catania is 45 minutes away
  • Family rooms and pets accepted, rare in Italian 5★

Atlantis Bay - The Leading Hotels of the World

*The only 5★ in Taormina set at sea level, when all the other palaces dominate the cliff.*

Atlantis Bay does not play the promontory card like its neighbours clinging to the Taormina cliff. The hotel settles at water level, in a cove that opens directly onto the bay facing Isola Bella. We reach it without transfer or endless lift, a real argument when carrying suitcases in the height of August. Rates start at 1 158 € per night, a level that places the establishment in the same league as the great houses of the Sicilian coast. The pool and wellness centre occupy most of the time on site, between sea baths and treatments. Room service and the airport shuttle simplify a stay that remains above all seaside. We regret not having more details on the table, but the position on the water is enough to justify the trip 😌.

What makes this hotel unique

  • Member of The Leading Hotels of the World, rated 9.4/10 on 267 reviews
  • Direct access to a private cove, without funicular or transfer
  • Airport shuttle available, useful from Catania around 50 km
  • Family rooms available, pets accepted
  • Spa, fitness centre and pool on site

The Ashbee Hotel - The Leading Hotels of the World

A 5★ Leading Hotels of the World that bets on discretion rather than on decor, in the historic centre of Taormina.

The Ashbee Hotel, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World network, occupies a central position in Taormina, on the Ionian coast of Sicily. The 181 reviews collected on Booking raise the score to 9.4/10, a rare score for this category of establishment. The pool remains the rallying point of the days, between two visits to the ancient Greek theatre and the alleys of Corso Umberto. Count from 1 005 € per night, a rate that places the address among the most expensive in the city. The site does not detail the number of rooms nor the style of the interiors, which leaves a part of the unknown once the door is crossed. Pets are admitted, family rooms exist, and an airport shuttle simplifies the arrival from Catania. The private parking on site, rare in the narrow streets of Taormina, counts among the concrete arguments for booking 😌.

What makes this hotel unique

  • Rated 9.4/10 on 181 Booking reviews, rare for a 5★.
  • Member of the Leading Hotels of the World network.
  • On-site pool, family rooms and airport shuttle included.
  • Private parking on site, a rare asset in the streets of Taormina.
  • Pets accepted, facilities for disabled guests available.

Grand Hotel San Pietro Taormina - Preferred Hotels & Resorts

A stone balcony suspended above the Gulf of Naxos, where the pool seems to merge into the Ionian Sea.

Grand Hotel San Pietro Taormina clings to the Sicilian cliff, above the Gulf of Naxos, member of the Preferred Hotels & Resorts network. The score climbs to 9.3/10 on 478 reviews, rare for an establishment displayed from 1 003 € per night. The outdoor pool benefits from a clear view of the Ionian Sea, with no obstacle between the water and the horizon. The spa and fitness centre occupy a separate wing, far from the hubbub of the lobby. On the practical side, the airport shuttle and private parking simplify arrival from Catane. Pets are accepted and family rooms exist, which remains rare at this level of range. The rate climbs quickly, but the overhanging position justifies a good part of the bill 😌.

What makes this hotel unique

  • Outdoor pool with direct view of the Gulf of Naxos.
  • Airport shuttle included from Catane, about 45 minutes.
  • Spa and fitness centre on site.
  • Private and free parking, rare in central Taormina.
  • Pets accepted, family rooms available.

Mazzarò Sea Palace - The Leading Hotels of the World

A seaside palace nestled at the foot of Taormina, private beach included.

Mazzarò Sea Palace occupies the bay of the same name, below Taormina, with direct access to the private beach. The score of 9,3/10 from 235 Booking reviews places the property among the highest rated on the Ionian coast. The outdoor pool overlooks the sea, with no road or promenade between the loungers and the water. The spa and fitness centre remain open to guests who prefer indoors to beach days. Expect from 1 413 € per night, a rate that remains in the upper range of 5-star addresses in the region. The private parking on site is a real plus, as Via Nazionale offers little space for parking. Family rooms and pets accepted broaden the clientele beyond the honeymoon couple 😌.

What makes this hotel unique

  • Direct access to the private beach in Mazzarò bay
  • Outdoor pool facing the Ionian Sea
  • Spa and fitness centre on site
  • Private parking on site, rare on Via Nazionale
  • 9,3/10 from 235 Booking reviews, high score for the area

Villa Sant'Andrea, A Belmond Hotel, Taormina Mare

A 19th-century Liberty villa set on its own cove facing Isola Bella.

Villa Sant'Andrea, A Belmond Hotel occupies a 19th-century villa built for an English aristocrat, positioned directly on the bay of Mazzarò. The ochre façade and green shutters look out over a turquoise sea, Isola Bella right opposite. Here, no grand marble hall: the atmosphere remains that of an enlarged family home, with terraced gardens and umbrella pines. Standard room from 2 330 € per night, a rate that includes access to a private beach rare on this rocky coast. The service remains attentive without being stiff, in the Belmond tradition. The infinity pool overlooks the cove, but keeps a modest size compared to the neighbouring hotel liners. We come here for the sea, not for the architecture, and the hotel owns it. 😌

What makes this hotel unique

  • Private beach on the bay of Mazzarò, facing Isola Bella
  • 19th-century villa, former English aristocratic residence
  • Infinity pool overlooking the cove
  • Airport shuttle included, Catania around 50 minutes
  • Pets accepted, family rooms available

La Plage Resort

A beach resort set directly on the beach at Taormina, designed for the sea above all else.

La Plage Resort stretches along the seafront of Taormina, just a few metres from the sand. The score rises to 9.1/10 from 644 reviews, a rare score for a beach establishment of this size. We like the direct beachfront location, a real plus in a region where many hotels announce the sea without ever really touching it. The rooms remain designed for family stays, with adapted options and domestic pets accepted. The spa and fitness centre complete the wellness offer, with free Wi-Fi available everywhere, including on the terrace. Count from 686 € per night, a rate that places the address in the upper Sicilian market. The free private parking, a rare detail for a 5-star on the seafront, seriously simplifies arrival by car. 😌

What makes this hotel unique

  • Direct beach access, at Taormina, without crossing a road
  • Spa and fitness centre on site
  • Private and free parking, rare for a 5★ on the seafront
  • Airport shuttle available from Catania

NH Collection Taormina

*A contemporary five-star hotel perched on the heights of Taormina, between NH Collection comfort and Sicilian panorama.*

The NH Collection Taormina occupies an overhanging position, via Circonvallazione, on the heights of the town. The façade is sober, contemporary, far from the historic palazzi of the centre. Inside, we find the NH Collection codes: clean lines, light materials, subdued lighting in the common areas. The outdoor pool remains the number one asset, surrounded by sun loungers with views over the Sicilian hills. The spa and fitness centre complete the wellness offer, welcome after a day of walking in the steep alleys of Taormina. Count from 810 € per night, a rate that places the establishment in the upper end of the local market. The service remains efficient, without the extra soul of a historic house 😌.

What makes this hotel unique

  • Outdoor pool open to guests, views over the heights of Taormina
  • Spa and fitness centre on site
  • Airport shuttle available, convenient from Catania
  • Private parking on site, rare in the historic centre of Taormina

Palazzo Vecchio Taormina

A discreet palazzo perched in the steep alleys of the old town, far from the palaces aligned along the corniche.

The Palazzo Vecchio Taormina occupies a steep alley in the historic centre, Salita Ciampoli, a few steps from Corso Umberto. The façade remains discreet, almost anonymous, but the interior opens onto volumes more ample than expected from the street. We like the spa, rare in an establishment of this size in Taormina, designed for a moment of relaxation after the climb into town. The non-smoking and family rooms cover a wide range, from the honeymoon couple to the multi-generational family. Count from 840 € per night, a rate that places the address among the most expensive in the city without offering all the codes of the classic palace. The restaurant does the job without excessive pretension, and room service allows skipping the steps when the Sicilian heat weighs. The airport shuttle remains the most concrete argument for those arriving in Catania without wanting to negotiate a taxi. 😌

What makes this hotel unique

  • Spa and wellness centre integrated, rare in the historic centre of Taormina.
  • Airport shuttle available, useful from Catania about 50 km away.
  • Family rooms and facilities for people with reduced mobility.
  • Location Salita Ciampoli, steep alley a short walk from Corso Umberto.
  • Rating 8.9/10 from 182 Booking reviews, rates from 840 € per night.

Everything to know

The complete guide to Taormina

Why we recommend Taormina for a palace stay

Taormina sits on a limestone balcony, suspended between the Ionian Sea and Etna smoking in the distance. The Teatro Greco, an ancient amphitheatre still in use, overlooks a bay where the greatest names in Italian hospitality have settled for more than a century. The San Domenico Palace, a former 14th-century Dominican convent taken over by Four Seasons, served as the backdrop for the second season of The White Lotus: since then, booking a room on the cloister side requires planning several months ahead. A few metres away, the Grand Hotel Timeo clings literally to the ancient theatre, the only palace in town to enjoy this immediate proximity.

What we like less: the town remains tiny, its steep lanes clog quickly in high season, and some historic palaces show bathrooms or corridors that date a little, despite recent renovations. We remain convinced nonetheless that Taormina justifies the detour, provided one chooses the right window and the right neighbourhood. 😌

When to go: the real window

Etna's Sicily enjoys dry, scorching summers, with peaks beyond 35°C in July and August. Hotels are fully booked, rates climb 40 to 60% compared with spring, and Corso Umberto becomes difficult to cross at the end of the day. The real luxury, in Taormina, consists mainly in coming outside this window.

PeriodWeatherCrowdsHotel rates
May, JuneMild, sea still coolModerateStandard
July, AugustVery hot, drySaturatedPeak, +40 to 60%
September, OctoberWarm, sea at pleasant temperatureModerateStandard to high
November to MarchCool, possible rainLow, several hotels closeLow, but reduced choice

September and early October remain our preferred slot: the sea has kept the summer warmth, the palaces operate at full staff but without the queue outside every restaurant. Caution, however, around Easter, when religious Sicily draws its own crowds.

Where to stay: historic centre, Mazzarò bay or residential heights

Taormina divides into three distinct zones, and the choice completely changes the experience.

NeighbourhoodAtmosphereHotel typeIdeal for
Historic centre (Corso Umberto)Pedestrian, lively, shopsHistoric palaces, boutique hotelsCulture, gastronomy, walking
Mazzarò bay, belowSeaside, calm, direct sea accessBeach resorts, seafront palacesRelaxation, private beach, spa
Heights (Circonvallazione)Residential, silent, open viewContemporary 5-star hotelsAbsolute calm, panoramic view

In the historic centre, the San Domenico Palace and the Grand Hotel Timeo occupy the most sought-after locations, steps from the ancient theatre. The Palazzo Vecchio Taormina, more discreet, nestles in a steep lane away from the façades aligned along the cornice, for those who prefer anonymity to a frontal view. The Ashbee Hotel, member of Leading Hotels of the World, plays the card of restraint with only 25 rooms in the heart of the old town.

Below, Mazzarò bay concentrates the addresses most turned toward the sea: Atlantis Bay, the only 5-star set at water level rather than above, Mazzarò Sea Palace with its private beach, Villa Sant'Andrea installed in a 19th-century Liberty villa facing Isola Bella, and La Plage Resort, conceived directly on the sand. The Grand Hotel San Pietro Taormina adds an infinity pool that seems to merge with the Gulf of Naxos.

On the heights, the NH Collection Taormina bets on a residential and calm setting, far from the bustle of Corso Umberto, for those who want the view without the crowd.

  • Historic palaces: San Domenico Palace, Grand Hotel Timeo
  • Seafront: Atlantis Bay, Mazzarò Sea Palace, Villa Sant'Andrea, La Plage Resort
  • Discretion and boutique: Palazzo Vecchio Taormina, The Ashbee Hotel
  • Open view and calm: NH Collection Taormina, Grand Hotel San Pietro Taormina

Tables and gastronomy near the palaces

The grand hotels of Taormina have long integrated their own signature restaurant rather than sending clients back to Corso Umberto. The Ashbee Hotel hosts a Michelin-starred restaurant, a rarity for an establishment of this size. The Grand Hotel Timeo plays the high-end Sicilian card with a direct view of the Greek theatre, while the San Domenico Palace offers a culinary offering spread between its garden and its terrace overlooking the bay.

Outside the hotels, Corso Umberto is full of decent but uneven trattorias: better to ask the concierge than follow the signs most visible from the street.

Budget: how much to plan for a palace stay

A three-night stay in one of these ten 5-star hotels is rarely budgeted under 2 500 euros for two people, excluding flights.

  • Accommodation: between 500 and 1 200 euros per night depending on season and view
  • Dinners: 150 to 300 euros per meal in hotel restaurants
  • Transfers: 70 to 100 euros for a private car from Catania
  • Spa and treatments: 150 to 250 euros for a one-hour treatment
  • Extras: boat excursion to Isola Bella, Etna outing, private boat rental

Rates climb sharply in July and August, and drop 30 to 40% from mid-October.

Practical tips before booking

The reference airport remains Catane-Fontanarossa, about 50 minutes' drive, versus more than an hour and a half from Palermo. Most palaces organise their own private transfer, more comfortable than the local bus that serves Taormina from Catania station.

Once on site, the car becomes unnecessary: the historic centre is explored exclusively on foot, and Mazzarò bay is reached by cable car or hotel shuttle in a few minutes. For palaces perched on the heights, simply allow a little more walking or an occasional taxi.

  • Book San Domenico Palace and Grand Hotel Timeo at least 4 to 6 months before a summer stay
  • Check winter closure dates of certain beach resorts (November to March)
  • Bring shoes suited to the paved and steep lanes
  • Request the beach shuttle at booking time, rather than on site
  • Anticipate Corso Umberto at peak hours (19h-21h) if seeking calm

With these markers, a stay in one of Taormina's ten palaces can be planned without unpleasant surprises, either on budget or on the real atmosphere of the chosen neighbourhood.

Frequently asked questions

What travellers ask us most

What is the best time to book a palace in Taormina?+

We recommend May-June or September-October: the sea stays pleasant, rates stay reasonable and hotels do not reach saturation. July and August are fully booked several months in advance and push prices up by 40 to 60%.

How much budget should one allow for three nights in a 5-star in Taormina?+

Allow between 2 500 and 4 500 euros for two people over three nights, accommodation and hotel dinners included, excluding flights. Rates vary greatly between a stay in May and a stay in August at the same hotel.

Should one choose the historic centre or Mazzarò bay?+

The historic centre, around San Domenico Palace and Grand Hotel Timeo, suits those who wish to walk to Corso Umberto and the Greek theatre. Mazzarò bay, with Atlantis Bay or Villa Sant'Andrea, favours direct sea access and a more seaside atmosphere.

Do Taormina palaces suit a family stay?+

The Ashbee Hotel highlights a wellness and family offer in the heart of the historic centre. The resorts of Mazzarò bay, such as Mazzarò Sea Palace or La Plage Resort, offer more useful beach space with children.

Is a car necessary once on site?+

No, and we even advise against it. The historic centre is explored on foot, Mazzarò bay is reached by cable car or shuttle, and the cobbled streets make driving impractical in the old town.

How to reach Taormina from the nearest airport?+

Catania-Fontanarossa airport lies around 50 minutes by road. Most palaces arrange a private transfer, more comfortable than the bus link from Catania station.

Is San Domenico Palace booked earlier than the other hotels in the selection?+

Yes, markedly. Since its appearance in the second season of The White Lotus, the best cloister-side rooms often book four to six months ahead for a summer stay.
