We recommend the Mandarin Oriental to business travellers wanting to decompress after UN meetings or private banks, and to couples seeking urban spa without Alpine folklore. It's a hotel for the over-40s and beyond, who prioritise service quality and wellness kit over Belle Époque charm. Families accepted, interconnecting rooms available, but clientele remains mostly adult and international.

The building dates from the 1950s, sober modernist architecture, six storeys in light stone without ornament. Interiors redone in 2013 by studio Joyce Wang, which imported Mandarin Oriental codes: lacquered woodwork, silk screens, bespoke furniture, beige and taupe palette. Standard ceiling height (2.80 m), rooms from 35 to 120 m² for suites. The whole prioritises technical comfort over spectacular decor, marble in bathrooms, bleached oak parquet, indirect lighting everywhere.

Two tables at the Mandarin Oriental: Yakumanka for nikkei cuisine (Peruvian-Japanese fusion), open lunch and dinner, and Café Calla for breakfasts and light lunches, quayside terrace in summer. Funky Claude bar serves signature cocktails and Japanese whiskies until midnight. Room service runs 24/7, full menu with vegetarian and gluten-free options. No starred chef in the kitchen, but execution remains precise and local produce (Léman fish, Alpine cheeses) well handled.

The Mandarin Oriental stands on Quai Turrettini, right bank, two minutes' walk from Pont du Mont-Blanc and five from Cornavin station. The jet d'eau visible from lake-view rooms, old town ten minutes along the quays. Banking and diplomatic quarter, quiet after 7pm, starred restaurants (Bayview, Domaine de Châteauvieux) under 3 km. Tram 15 right outside, airport 15 minutes by private shuttle or taxi. The lake offers morning strolls, Bains des Pâquis (historic public baths) 800 metres away for local contrast.
