The Adriatic palace that survived the war and still holds the cliff facing Lokrum.
Hotel Excelsior
From
758.407 €
“White stone terrace suspended over the sea, with direct access to a private pebble beach.”
L'Hotel Excelsior occupies a limestone cliff five minutes' walk from the Porte Ploče, facing the island of Lokrum. We sleep in rooms with wrought-iron balconies, polished parquet, neo-classical furniture, bay windows framing the Adriatic. The outdoor pool is carved into the rock, lined with teak loungers, open from May to September. The spa offers a hammam and massage cabins with sea views, effective without being spectacular. From 758 € a night, we pay for the location and private beach access, not the design (some rooms could do with refreshing). The service is attentive, multilingual, well-versed with international clientele. An address that bets on its natural setting rather than innovation ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the Excelsior to couples in their forties and beyond seeking a classic seaside palace with an unbeatable view, without design pretensions. It is an address for late honeymoons, wedding anniversaries, romantic retreats between cultural visits and idleness. Families with teenagers find their place thanks to the private beach and the pool, yet the atmosphere remains hushed, little suited to young children.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The hotel dates from 1913, rebuilt after the 1991-1992 bombings that struck Dubrovnik. Belle Époque architecture in white Istrian stone, neo-classical façade with columns, tiered terraces that follow the cliff slope. Classic interiors with light marbles, crystal chandeliers, waxed woodwork, Persian rugs in the common areas. The rooms range between 28 and 65 m², some renovated in 2018, others retain 2000s furniture that is beginning to date.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The Sensus restaurant offers a Mediterranean menu with Adriatic fish and Istrian truffles, service on the terrace facing the sea from April to October. The Abakus Piano Bar serves cocktails and tapas until midnight, with a pianist three evenings a week. Continental buffet breakfast served in the panoramic room or on the terrace, correct without being memorable. Room service available 24/7, reduced menu after 23h.
