A 19th-century palace transformed into a contemporary townhouse, where Porto unfolds from the rooftops.

“Rooftop pool with 360° views over the Douro, tiled roofs and the Clérigos tower.”
The Torel Palace Porto occupies a neoclassical palace from 1869 in the Cedofeita district, halfway up the slope between the historic centre and the gardens of the Palácio de Cristal. We slept in rooms where the original stucco dialogues with signed contemporary furniture, midnight blue velvet, bathrooms in black marble. The rooftop pool operates all year round, heated, with loungers facing the bell towers and the river below. The service is attentive without being stiff, we sense a real independent hotel direction. From 432 € per night, it is one of the best-rated addresses in Porto (9.6/10 on 911 reviews), and we understand why after one night. The Digby restaurant offers a contemporary Portuguese menu, correct without being memorable, but the terrace compensates. ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the Torel Palace to couples in their thirties and beyond seeking an elegant base without slipping into classic palace territory. It is an address for romantic weekends, discreet birthdays, travellers who appreciate historic architecture reinterpreted with taste. Families are welcome, yet the intimate scale and rooftop lean towards an adult clientele.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The building dates from 1869, built for a family of Porto merchants in the late neoclassical style. Pink granite façade, central marble staircase, 3.80 m ceilings with original stuccos and rosettes. The 2020 renovation preserved the volumes and woodwork, injecting contemporary furniture (Gubi armchairs, Flos lighting, upholstered headboards). The 26 rooms are all different, between 22 and 45 m², some with balconies over the rooftops.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The Digby restaurant occupies the ground floor and inner terrace, with a contemporary Portuguese menu by a local chef (fish from the Matosinhos market, meats from Trás-os-Montes). Breakfast is served until 11am, buffet and à la carte, with homemade pastéis de nata. The rooftop bar offers classic cocktails and a small tapas menu, open until 11pm in summer. Room service operates from 7am to 10pm.
