MACAM Hotel

We recommend the MACAM to travellers who prefer contemporary art to azulejos, and Belém to Bairro Alto. It's a hotel for thirty-to-fifty-something couples, discreet collectors, architects on weekend breaks, a few cultured families visiting the area's museums. Family rooms accommodate children, but the clientele remains mostly adult and international.

The MACAM occupies a contemporary five-storey building constructed in 2022, sleek white facade with large picture windows. Minimalist interiors: polished concrete, light wood, Scandinavian-Portuguese furniture, white walls that serve as settings for the works. Each room is unique, curated by an artist: some have mural frescoes, others sculptures or video installations. The rooftop houses the pool and a bar under pergola, 360° clear views.

The MACAM restaurant offers a contemporary Portuguese menu, produce from the Atlantic coast and Alentejo. Breakfast buffet with Belém pastries (pastéis delivered every morning), Iberian charcuterie, ewe's milk cheeses. The rooftop bar serves cocktails and small plates until 11pm, wine list focused on Douro and Alentejo. Room service available 24/7, reduced menu but well executed.

The MACAM stands on Rua da Junqueira, Belém's main artery along the Tagus. Jerónimos Monastery three minutes on foot, Belém Tower ten, MAAT (contemporary art museum) five. The neighbourhood is calm, residential and cultural, far from the tourist bustle of Alfama and Chiado. Tram 15E right outside the hotel, direct link to Praça do Comércio in twenty minutes. Portela Airport 25 minutes by private shuttle, Santa Apolónia station fifteen minutes by taxi.
