“Private terrace over the Grand Canal in the suites, with direct views of Santa Maria della Salute.”
The Gritti Palace occupies a 15th-century palazzo facing the Grand Canal, between the Accademia bridge and St Mark’s Square. We sleep in rooms where Rubelli velvet rubs shoulders with Venetian stucco, Murano chandeliers and original terrazzo floors. The Club del Doge serves contemporary Venetian cuisine on a floating terrace, one of the city’s most in-demand (book two months ahead). The Gritti Epicurean School spa offers treatments with Tuscan olive oils in a white marble setting. From 4 405 € a night, we quickly grasp that the address remains one of Venice’s priciest, but the view from the canal suites justifies the rate for a special occasion. Service is impeccable, discreet, never obsequious. Book for an anniversary or honeymoon, not a spur-of-the-moment weekend ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the Gritti to couples celebrating an anniversary or honeymoon, who seek iconic Venetian style without compromising on service. It’s a palace for travellers who already know Venice and want to sleep in history, facing the canal, far from mass tourist circuits. Affluent families find their place here, but the clientele remains mostly adult, between forty and seventy.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The Gritti palazzo dates from 1475, built for Doge Andrea Gritti, converted into a hotel in 1948. Venetian Gothic façade in Istrian stone, mullioned windows, wrought-iron balconies overlooking the Grand Canal. Interiors restored in 2013: painted stucco, coffered ceilings, terrazzo floors, 18th-century Venetian furniture mixed with contemporary pieces by Rubelli. Rooms measure between 28 and 120 m², ceiling height 3.80 m, all different.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The Club del Doge serves contemporary Venetian cuisine on a floating terrace facing Santa Maria della Salute, open from April to October. Daniele Turco works lagoon produce (moleche, sarde in saor, risotto al nero di seppia) with modern technique. Breakfast is taken on the same terrace or in room, with pastries from the in-house bakery. The Gritti Terrace Bar offers spritz and signature cocktails until midnight, canal view.
