The Grande Albergo Delle Rose occupies the former casino built in 1927 by the Italians, when Rhodes was under the administration of the Dodecanese. We bed down in a rationalist building with generous volumes, marble columns, four-metre ceilings, oak parquet in the communal areas. The rooms are classic, some with direct views over the Aegean Sea, others over the interior gardens. The spa and pool make up for the sometimes dated furniture. Elli Beach is a two-minute walk away, Mandraki port and the old town in five. We recommend it for the location and architecture, from 222 € a night, not for the interior design.

Architecture and interiors
The building dates from 1927, constructed under Italian Dodecanese administration as a casino and luxury hotel. Sober rationalist architecture, ochre façade with colonnades, symmetrical volumes typical of the fascist era. Interiors in white and beige marble, solid oak parquet in the hall, original Murano glass chandeliers. The rooms range from 22 to 45 m², renovated in waves, some retaining 1990s furniture.

The main restaurant serves a classic Mediterranean menu, grilled fish, mezze, fresh pasta, with sea-facing terrace. The breakfast buffet offers local produce, Greek yoghurt, thyme honey, goat's cheeses. Cocktail bar in the hall, open until midnight. Room service operates 24/7, reduced menu after 10pm.

The seafront is lively until 11pm, then quiet.
