The Royal has held Place Bellecour since 1912, and remains the most classic MGallery address in Lyon.

“Central position on Europe's largest pedestrian square, two minutes from Vieux Lyon and Presqu'île.”
Le Royal Hotel Lyon occupies a Haussmannian building on Place Bellecour, facing the statues and ochre facades. We slept in a classic room, thick carpet, dark wood furniture, beige marble bathroom. The style is sensible, a little dated in some rooms, but the location more than compensates. The service remains courteous, efficient, without excess of formalism. Rates from 161 € per night, reasonable for a 5★ in the city centre. We recommend for a no-frills palace weekend in Lyon, with Presqu'île within walking distance.
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the Royal to business travellers seeking a central pied-à-terre without contemporary design. Couples on a gastronomic weekend find a comfortable base to explore the bouchons and starred tables of the city. Families appreciate the family rooms and the possibility of bringing a dog, rare in this category.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The building dates from the early 20th century, stone facade typical of Lyonnaise architecture. Classic interiors, hall with columns and crystal chandeliers, marble staircase. Rooms range from 22 to 35 m², decent ceiling height, parquet or carpet depending on the floor. Progressive renovations, some rooms retain a 2000s style.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The Royal has a bar-lounge for breakfast and snacks, no gastronomic table on site. Room service covers light meals, short menu, honest execution. For dinner, we head out: Presqu'île concentrates around twenty bouchons and several starred tables within a ten-minute walk. The concierge orients well, reservations possible via the hotel.
