The 18th-century Hôtel-Dieu transformed into an IHG palace, between Rhône and Saône.
InterContinental Lyon - Hotel Dieu by IHG

“Dome listed as a historic monument from 1761, visible from the courtyard-side rooms.”
L'InterContinental Lyon - Hotel Dieu occupies the former royal hospital built by Soufflot between 1741 and 1761, facing the Rhône quays. We sleep in rooms with 3.20 m ceilings, solid oak parquet, contemporary furniture signed Jean-Philippe Nuel, bathrooms in grey Pulpis marble. The windows look out onto the lantern dome or the river, clear light all day long. The 1 500 m² spa carved into the vaulted 18th-century cellars retains the mineral freshness of the original stones. From 329 € a night, Booking rating 9.1/10 from 1 678 reviews, placing the address among Lyon's top three. Room service until 11pm, private parking under the building (rare in Presqu'île). A palace that assumes its architecture without turning it into a museum ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the address to travellers seeking a historic palace without folklore, between business meetings and dinners in town. Quadra and quinquagenarian couples appreciate the spa after a day of shopping on rue de la République. Families find their place (family rooms available), yet the clientele remains predominantly adult, mixing business and upscale leisure.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The Hôtel-Dieu was built between 1741 and 1761 by Jacques-Germain Soufflot (future architect of the Panthéon in Paris), enlarged in the 19th century. The lantern dome of 1761, listed as a historic monument, dominates the paved inner courtyard. IHG rehabilitation completed in 2019: 144 rooms and suites spread over four floors, contemporary decoration signed Jean-Philippe Nuel (marble, oak, brushed brass). The stone vaults in the basement now house the spa, pool and treatment rooms.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The restaurant Epona (ground floor, glass roof over the courtyard) offers a revisited Lyonnaise menu, pike quenelles, Bresse poultry, desserts with Voisin praline. Bar Le Dôme under the dome for cocktails and champagne, open until midnight. Continental buffet breakfast served from 6.30am to 11am, room service until 11pm. No starred table, yet solid cooking for an international chain palace.
