The last historic palace in San Francisco still standing, survivor of the 1906 earthquake.

“Garden Court: Art Nouveau glass roof from 1909, 27 metres high, breakfast under stained glass listed as a historic monument.”
The Palace Hotel has occupied the same location since 1875, rebuilt after the great earthquake. We enter via New Montgomery Street, white marble hall, bronze chandeliers, seven-metre Corinthian columns. The rooms blend period mouldings with contemporary equipment, king-size bedding, Italian marble bathrooms, 3.20-metre ceiling height in the historic suites. The indoor pool in the basement retains its blue tiling from the 1920s, subdued lighting, wooden cabins. From 854 € per night, a rate consistent for a palace in the financial centre. The service remains professional without being stiff, business clientele during the week, tourists at the weekend. We recommend a room on the inner courtyard side, quieter than Montgomery Street ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the Palace to travellers seeking a true historic palace in San Francisco, not a design boutique hotel. It is an address for couples in their forties and older, high-end business travel, heritage weekends, family ceremonies in the Garden Court. Beaux-Arts architecture enthusiasts will find their match, the clientele remains predominantly adult and American.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The current Palace Hotel dates from 1909, rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake that destroyed the original 1875 building. Beaux-Arts architecture by Trowbridge & Livingston, grey granite façade, seven storeys, 553 rooms. Classic interiors: Carrara marble floors, walnut panelling, crystal chandeliers, Persian rugs in the corridors. The Garden Court remains the jewel: 27-metre Art Nouveau glass roof, exposed metal structure, Ionic columns, Austrian mosaic floor. Full renovation in 2015, preservation of historic elements, modernisation of the rooms.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The Garden Court serves breakfast and brunch under the glass roof, classic American cuisine, eggs Benedict, pancakes, smoked salmon. The Pied Piper Bar retains its 1909 Maxfield Parrish fresco, signature cocktails, business clientele after 6pm. 24-hour room service, palace bistro menu, burgers at 32 $, club sandwich, Caesar salads. No gastronomic table, yet the Garden Court setting justifies the trip for a Sunday brunch.
