Bardessono Hotel and Spa

We recommend Bardessono to forty-something and fifty-something couples seeking an oenological retreat without ostentation, attuned to sustainable architecture and pared-back design. The address suits travellers who wish to explore Napa without the flash of classic resorts, favouring private tastings and discreet dinners. Families are accepted but the clientele remains predominantly adult, on romantic weekends or wellness escapes.

Bardessono opened in 2009, designed by architect Howard Backen with environmental engineer Tom Knezic. Low-rise building (two storeys), structure in wood reclaimed from Midwest barns, roofs planted with sedums for thermal insulation, integrated solar panels. Minimalist interiors: polished concrete, lava stone, recycled glass, bespoke walnut furniture. Rooms from 46 to 186 m², all at ground level or on the upper floor, with private patios and bioethanol fireplaces.

The restaurant Lucy occupies a glazed room overlooking the inner garden, seasonal Californian cuisine by chef Victor Scargle. Short menu, produce from neighbouring farms (Hoffman Farm, Dirty Girl Produce), sustainable meats and fish. Cellar focused on Napa Valley, with a few references from Sonoma and Oregon. Continental breakfast included, room service available until 22h. Wine bar open until 23h, selection of artisanal Californian spirits.

Bardessono stands on Yount Street, the main artery of Yountville, a village of 3 000 inhabitants in the centre of Napa Valley. The French Laundry (3 Michelin stars) 400 metres on foot, Bouchon Bakery and Bistro Jeanty on the same street. Wine estates accessible in 10-20 minutes (Domaine Chandon, Inglenook, Opus One). San Francisco airport 1h15 by car, Oakland 1h05. The village is quiet after 21h, very residential, frequented by oenophile tourists during the day.
