“Rooms fitted out in the former vault room, gilded coffered ceilings and original mouldings intact.”
The Bank Hotel occupies the former Bank of Sweden opposite the Royal Palace, and the 1910 proportions remain intact. We bed down under five-metre ceilings, between gilded mouldings and Gubi furniture, in rooms where the safes still protrude from the walls. Nordic light enters through tall sash windows, softened by linen curtains. The Bonnie's restaurant serves contemporary Scandinavian cuisine in the former banking hall, under an Art Nouveau glass roof. The bar occupies the former trading room, original green marble counter. From 403 € a night, we pay as much for the architecture as for the location, two minutes' walk from Gamla Stan. Service remains discreet, never obsequious ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the Bank Hotel to travellers seeking design in a historic setting, without palace pomp. It's an address for thirty-something couples and up, cultural weekends, discreet business dinners, architecture buffs who want to sleep in a monument. Families will find their place, but the atmosphere remains intimate, rather adult.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The building housed the Bank of Sweden from 1910 to 1976, Nordic neoclassical style with Art Nouveau influences. Grey granite façade, interiors restored in 2019 by the Wingårdhs studio. Gilded coffered ceilings, stuccoed mouldings, solid oak parquet, original glass roof above the restaurant. Rooms occupy the former office floor and vault room, volumes preserved, contemporary Scandinavian furniture.
