An 18th-century wine estate turned botanical palace, between Constantia vines and listed gardens.
The Cellars-Hohenort
From
320.64 €
“Nine hectares of historic gardens with a collection of centenary camellias and view over False Bay.”
The Cellars-Hohenort occupies two colonial manors in the heart of the Constantia vineyard, twenty minutes from Cape Town centre. We sleep in rooms spread between the main house (1693) and the Hohenort wing, some with stone fireplace and original parquet, others more contemporary on the garden side. The gardens are worth the detour: oak avenues, rose garden, protea collection, open view to False Bay. The Liz McGrath spa occupies an independent pavilion with five cabins and heated pool. The Greenhouse table (two Eat Out hats) offers technical South African cuisine, produce from the vegetable garden, local cellar. From 321 € per night, parking and Wi-Fi included. An address for those seeking viticultural calm without giving up palace service ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend The Cellars-Hohenort to couples in their forties and older seeking viticultural calm without straying far from Cape Town, garden and wine lovers. The address suits extended honeymoon trips, wellness retreats, gastronomic stays with excursions to neighbouring estates (Klein Constantia, Groot Constantia ten minutes away). Families are accepted, but the atmosphere remains hushed, clientele mostly adult.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The estate brings together two buildings: The Cellars (1693), former cellar of the Klaasenbosch farm, and Hohenort House (1752), Dutch colonial manor. Classic South African interiors: exposed beams, Robben Island stone fireplaces, yellowwood parquet, period furniture mixed with contemporary pieces. The rooms in the Hohenort wing (1990s) are more spacious, with private terraces overlooking the gardens. Forty-three rooms and suites in total, all different.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The Greenhouse holds the signature table: technical South African cuisine by chef Peter Tempelhoff, organic garden produce, eight-course tasting menu, cellar strong in Constantia chenin blanc and pinotage. The Conservatory serves breakfasts (continental buffet and à la carte) and light lunches on the glazed veranda. The Martini Bar offers cocktails and tapas in the evening, South African whisky list. 24-hour room service, simplified menu after 22h.
