Capella transforms an old Art Deco government building into a contemporary palace at the heart of Sydney's CBD.

“250 m² spa with heated indoor pool and views over the business district rooftops.”
Capella Sydney occupies a 1913 building on Loftus Street, between Circular Quay and Martin Place. The 192 rooms play the Australian minimalism card: blonde wood, limestone, floor-to-ceiling windows. The indoor pool sits on the top floor, natural light filtered through oak screens. The spa offers signature treatments inspired by the Pacific coast, cabins with rain-effect showers. We tested room service: swift execution, neat presentation, enamelled stoneware dishes. From 610 € a night, it's one of the newest addresses in the city centre, opened in 2022. The financial district imposes a brisk pace on weekdays, calmer at weekends ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend Capella Sydney to business travellers seeking a modern palace without colonial folklore, and to couples who prefer sleek design to ornate décors. The address suits short stays, stopovers between long-haul flights, urban weekends with quick access to the Opera House and the harbour. Families find their place thanks to family rooms and the indoor pool, but the clientele remains predominantly adult and professional.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The building dates from 1913, built to house government offices in the Australian Art Deco style. Hawkesbury sandstone facade, mullioned windows, 3.20-metre ceilings in the public areas. The 2021-2022 renovation preserved the original volumes while inserting contemporary materials: Calacatta marble, European oak, brushed brass. The 192 rooms are spread over eight floors, period lifts restored with walnut cabins.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The main restaurant offers a contemporary Australian menu, produce from New South Wales, Sydney Harbour fish delivered every morning. The bar occupies the former government entrance hall, coffered ceiling, signature cocktails based on local gin. Breakfast served until 11am on weekdays, noon at weekends, buffet or à la carte. Room service operates 24/7, reduced menu after midnight.
