“Two historic buildings connected by a glass footbridge, rooftop pool facing Table Mountain.”
Le Taj Cape Town occupies two 19th-century buildings, one neoclassical, the other Art deco, connected by a contemporary footbridge. We sleep in high-ceilinged rooms, waxed parquet, revisited colonial furniture, Indian marble bathrooms. The rooftop pool offers a direct view of Table Mountain, towel service and fresh juices all day. The Jiva spa offers Ayurvedic treatments, hammam, sauna, double cabins. The Mint restaurant serves Indo-Cape Townian fusion cuisine, well-stocked South African wine list. From 120 € a night, a rare rate for a historic 5★ in the heart of the centre. We recommend the mountain-side rooms, calmer than those on Wale Street ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the Taj to travellers seeking historic roots without sacrificing modern comfort. The hotel suits couples on a cultural city break, businessmen between meetings at Parliament, lovers of colonial architecture. Families appreciate the connecting rooms and rooftop pool, yet the clientele remains mostly adult, aged 35 to 60.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The Taj Cape Town unites two listed buildings: the former Standard Bank (1806), neoclassical façade in Table Mountain sandstone, and the Caledon building (1930), Art deco lines, projecting bay windows. Interiors restored in 2010, blend of Doric columns, original mouldings, contemporary Indian furniture, Hermès fabrics. Rooms range from 28 to 85 m², ceiling height 3.20 m in the historic wing. The glass footbridge on the second floor links the two wings, plunging view over the inner garden.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The Mint restaurant occupies the former banking hall, marble columns, original glass roof, open kitchen. Indo-Cape Townian fusion menu: revisited bobotie, kingklip curry, springbok tandoori. Continental and Indian buffet breakfast, dosas made to order. The Twankey Bar serves cocktails and tapas until midnight, club armchairs, wall library, local crowd after 22h. 24-hour room service, simplified menu after midnight.
