Sana Tulum Beachfront Boutique Hotel

We recommend Sana Tulum to couples aged 30-45 seeking a beach address without the bustle of the big resorts in the hotel zone. It's a hotel for discreet honeymoons, wellness retreats, detox weekends away from the Playa del Carmen clubs. Families with children will find the scale suitable, but the clientele remains mostly adult and in search of calm.

The Sana Tulum consists of low-slung palapas in tzalam wood and dried palm roofs, vernacular architecture reinterpreted by a local studio. Minimalist interiors: lime-washed white walls, polished concrete floors, rattan furniture and natural linen, bathrooms in Yucatán stone. 3.5-metre ceilings, palm fans, no air conditioning to respect the environment. Human scale, 12 rooms on a single level, cactus and bougainvillea gardens between the buildings.

The hotel restaurant serves contemporary Mexican cuisine, produce from the Yucatán peninsula, daily catch grilled over wood fires, lobster ceviches and tacos. Continental breakfast included, served on the sea-facing terrace until 11am. Fresh juice bar and smoothies all day, artisanal mezcal cocktail menu in the evening. Room service available 7am to 10pm, simplified menu but well executed.

The Sana Tulum stands on the Carretera Tulum-Boca Paila, 6 km south of Tulum centre, in the beachfront hotel zone. Tulum Mayan ruins 15 minutes by car, Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote cenotes 20 minutes. No public transport, rent a bike (10 USD/day at the hotel) or take shared taxis. Cancún airport 1h30 away, Tulum airport (new, 2024) 25 minutes. The area is quiet after 10pm, restaurants and bars clustered between km 7 and km 9.
