Hotel Milam occupies a plot in Región 12, fifteen minutes' drive from the beach, in locals' Tulum. We slept in a 28 m² room with polished concrete walls, king bed in local wood, open bathroom with Italian shower. The rooftop pool offers unobstructed views over the palms and the flat roofs of the neighbourhood, water at 26°C year-round. The spa offers Mayan massages and copal treatments, dark wood cabins, dim lighting. The restaurant serves revamped Yucatecan cuisine, local fish ceviche, tacos al pastor made to order. From 214 € a night, it's a calm alternative to zone hôtelière addresses, for those seeking Tulum without the Instagram scene ✨

Who is it for?

Who we recommend it to

We recommend the Milam to couples who want to discover Tulum without paying beach prices, and who prefer to rent a car to explore the region. It's an address for thirty- and fortysomethings seeking authenticity, who dine in town and spend the day between cenotes and ruins. Families with children will find the human scale reassuring, but the lack of walkable beach may frustrate.

The building

Architecture and interiors

The Milam is a contemporary 2018 build, three levels in raw concrete and tzalam wood. Minimalist architecture typical of modern Tulum, clean lines, large picture windows, vegetation integrated into the walkways. Rooms overlook a central patio or the street, 3.20 m ceiling height, ceiling fans in addition to air conditioning. The rooftop hosts the pool and a lounge terrace with suspended hammocks.

At the table

Restaurants, bar, service

The ground-floor restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, Yucatecan cuisine with Tulum market produce. We tested the mero ceviche (local grouper), cochinita pibil tacos, guacamole prepared in the dining room. Short menu, about ten dishes, mezcal and Mexican wines. Room service runs from 7am to 10pm, simplified menu. No dedicated bar, but the rooftop serves cocktails and craft beers until pool closing.

The archaeological zone is 10 minutes by car, zone hôtelière beaches 15 minutes depending on traffic. No reliable public transport, rent a car or rely on taxis (150 pesos to the beach).
