We recommend Layla Tulum to thirty-something couples who want to discover Tulum without blowing the budget, and to travellers who prioritise access to cenotes and ruins over beachfront. It's an address for reasonable honeymoons, three-four night wellness retreats, off-season romantic escapes. Fans of Azulik and Habitas will find the setting too tame, but those seeking a functional 5★ at the price of a European 4★ will be won over.

Layla Tulum is a recent construction, low architecture in whitewashed concrete and cedar wood, scattered around two pools. The volumes are generous, ceiling height at 3.50 m, large sliding glass doors opening onto private terraces. Minimalist decor: linen, rattan, a few local artisanal touches (ceramics, woven textiles). The whole counts around thirty rooms, human scale, boutique-hotel vibe rather than resort.

The on-site restaurant serves a contemporary Mexican menu, local fish ceviche, al pastor tacos, vegetarian bowls, open breakfast and dinner. The continental breakfast is included in some rates, decent buffet with tropical fruits, pan dulce, Chiapas coffee. No signature chef, honest cuisine without gastronomic pretensions. The palapa bar offers mezcal-based cocktails and peninsula craft beers, open until 23h.

Layla Tulum is located in the town centre, Calle Centauro, 2.5 km from the beach and 4 km from the Mayan ruins. The neighbourhood is residential, quiet after 20h, with a few restaurants and shops within five minutes' walk. The hotel zone (beaches, clubs, Azulik, Nomade) is ten minutes by car or bike. Cancún airport is 120 km away, two hours' drive, paid shuttle organised by the hotel. Tulum Pueblo remains the ideal starting point to explore cenotes (Gran Cenote at 5 km) and Sian Ka'an reserve.
