Sawai Man Mahal occupies a 1740 haveli on Bhawani Singh Road, two kilometres from the City Palace. We sleep in high-ceilinged rooms, floors in white Makrana marble, carved jali windows, sheesham wood furniture. The central pool is lined with restored Shekhawati frescoes, the water reflects the ogive arches. The spa offers Ayurvedic massages and treatments with saffron from Kashmir. From 195 € a night, we find here the human scale that the great palaces of Jaipur have lost. The restaurant serves family Rajasthani cuisine, recipes passed down by the grandmother of the current owner ✨

Who is it for?

Who we recommend it to

We recommend the Sawai Man Mahal to travellers seeking the intimacy of a family home rather than the pomp of the grand palaces. It is an address for couples on a cultural trip, lovers of Rajput architecture, photographers wanting to capture the low light on the frescoes. Families find space and discretion here, the pool reassures children used to Western comfort.

The building

Architecture and interiors

The haveli dates from 1740, built for a Rajput noble at the court of Sawai Jai Singh II. Typical Rajasthan architecture: central peristyle courtyard, polylobed arches, jali in red Dholpur sandstone. The Shekhawati frescoes were restored in 2019 by artisans from Mandawa, natural pigments on lime. Ceilings at 4.5 metres, teak beams, veined white marble floor. The whole covers 800 m² over two levels, neem garden and bougainvillea at the rear.

At the table

Restaurants, bar, service

The restaurant occupies the former reception hall, single table for 18 under a painted ceiling. Family Rajasthani cuisine: laal maas, ker sangri, dal baati churma, Sawai grandmother's recipes. Breakfast served in the courtyard or in the room, masala tea prepared on request. No signature chef, it is the house cook who has been at work for twenty years. The bar offers saffron and rosewater cocktails, local Jaisalmer gin.
