La Bastide de Damien

We recommend the Bastide to couples in their forties and older looking for a gastronomic weekend in peace, away from city-centre hotels. It is an address for lovers of signature cuisine and private wellness, not for those who want to be within walking distance of the cours Mirabeau. Families will find little in the way of activities, the clientele remains mainly adult and in search of discretion.

The bastide follows the codes of traditional Provençal architecture: dry stone, coloured shutters, generous volumes. The interiors favour contemporary comfort over period reconstruction, with bathrooms equipped with private jacuzzis in each room. The scale remains modest, ten rooms at most judging by the number of reviews. The landscaped setting relies on the restanques and Mediterranean vegetation, olive trees and cypresses.

Dominique Frérard's table alone justifies the detour: doubly distinguished by the Teritoria guide (5 keys Demeure d'Exception and Table Remarquable). The cuisine works with Provençal produce with starred-house standards, without an official Michelin star. Room service allows the gastronomic experience to be extended in the room. No signature bar mentioned, the emphasis remains on the restaurant and the cellar.

The bastide stands on chemin de la Valentine, three kilometres south-east of the historic centre of Aix-en-Provence. The neighbourhood is residential and quiet, with no shops or restaurants nearby. It takes ten minutes by car to reach the cours Mirabeau or the cathédrale Saint-Sauveur. Marseille-Provence airport is twenty-five minutes away, Aix TGV station fifteen. Free parking compensates for the distance, essential for exploring the region.
