“Rooftop with heated pool open year-round, views over the lake and skyline, accessible to residents.”
Le Viceroy Chicago occupies an 18-storey limestone and brick building, built in 1929 for upscale apartments. We tested a lake-view room: solid oak parquet flooring, midnight blue velvet headboard, Carrara white marble bathroom with deep bathtub. Morning light streams through the original sash windows, double glazing filters the noise from State Street. The rooftop with heated pool stays open even in winter, clear views over Navy Pier and the lake. The service is efficient without being intrusive, typical of well-run chain hotels. From 280 € per night, it offers good value for Gold Coast.
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the Viceroy to travellers seeking a design pied-à-terre in Gold Coast without paying palace prices on Michigan Avenue. It suits thirty-something couples, shopping weekends, business trips with free time. Families with dogs appreciate the pet-friendly policy at no extra cost and proximity to the lake.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The building dates from 1929, constructed as an upscale residence in Chicago's sober Art Deco style. Indiana limestone facade, red bricks, original ironwork in the lobby. Interiors refurbished in 2017: solid wood flooring, velvet, brushed brass, midnight blue and anthracite grey palette. Rooms measure between 28 and 45 m², ceiling height 2.80 m, preserved sash windows.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
Le Somerset, the ground-floor restaurant, serves a contemporary American menu: Wagyu beef burgers, Chesapeake Bay oysters, cocktails at the black marble bar. Continental breakfast included in some packages, otherwise 22 $ per person. The rooftop bar offers tapas and cocktails until 23h on weekdays, midnight at weekends. Room service available 24/7, reduced menu after 22h.
