The Peninsula Chicago holds the Magnificent Mile with Hong Kong rigour and American scale, without playing the historic card.
The Peninsula Chicago
From
538.445 €
“Semi-Olympic indoor pool on the top floor with floor-to-ceiling windows over the skyscrapers, open 6h–22h.”
The Peninsula Chicago occupies a contemporary 1999 building two blocks from Michigan Avenue, and we recognise the Peninsula signature straight away: white marble, mahogany woodwork, white-gloved service. Rooms start at 45 m², all with deep bathtub and integrated technology (control tablet, mirror TV in the bathroom). The pool on the 19th floor remains the best argument: 25 metres under a glass roof, teak loungers, plunging view over Water Tower. The 450 m² spa offers Peninsula signature treatments (hot stone massage, 90 minutes, 295 $). From 538 € per night, we pay for the consistency of the service and the Magnificent Mile location, not the decorative originality. The lobby bar attracts a business clientele at the end of the day, hushed atmosphere, live jazz at the weekend. An efficient five-star, comfortable, without surprise ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the Peninsula to business travellers who want impeccable service without local folklore, and to affluent families on a city break (the pool keeps the children occupied, the rooms are spacious). It is also an address for couples in their forties on a Magnificent Mile shopping weekend, dinner at the Lobby, discreet return. The clientele is international, mainly Asian and American, few Europeans out of season.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The Peninsula Chicago occupies a 20-storey building constructed in 1999 by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, beige limestone façade and sash windows. Interiors signed Peter Remedios: white Thassos marble, mahogany woodwork, Austrian crystal chandeliers, American neoclassical style without boldness. Rooms measure 45 to 280 m², all with oak parquet, Rubelli fabrics, black-and-white marble bathrooms. The scale is generous, the decoration restrained, designed to last twenty years without ageing.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The Lobby offers an all-day menu: full American breakfast (38 $), afternoon tea (65 $ per person, reserve), solid continental dinner without a star. Shanghai Terrace on the 8th floor serves refined Cantonese cuisine (dim sum, lacquered duck, lobster with ginger), wine list focused on Burgundy, view over Water Tower, allow 120 $ per person. The Z Bar draws a local crowd for classic cocktails (Old Fashioned, Negroni) and live jazz on Friday and Saturday evenings. Room service operates 24/7, full menu, delivery in 35 minutes.
