Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach

We recommend the Sofitel JBR to European families who want the beach without blowing the budget, and to business travellers based in Dubai Marina. It's a hotel for first stays in Dubai, thirty-something couples, extended weekends with children. Regulars of the Burj Al Arab or Atlantis will find the standard classic, but the JBR location and rate more than compensate.

Typical Marina skyline glass and steel tower, opened in the 2000s during the JBR property boom. Standard Sofitel interiors: beige marble in the lobby, light wood panelling, contemporary furniture signed Pierre-Yves Rochon. Rooms between 35 and 65 m², all with balcony, some suites with panoramic view of Palm Jumeirah. The architecture won't linger in minds, but the volumes are generous and natural light omnipresent.

Two tables at Sofitel JBR: Plantation, international buffet for breakfast (included depending on rate, otherwise 95 AED), and Maui Beach, Polynesian restaurant by the pool open lunch and dinner. Maui serves grilled fish, pokes, tropical cocktails, decent menu without being memorable. 24/7 room service, simplified menu after 11pm. The Azur bar, on the ground floor, offers cocktails facing the Marina, lounge vibe from 6pm.

The Sofitel stands in Jumeirah Beach Residence, beachfront neighbourhood of Dubai Marina, between The Walk (shopping promenade) and the public beach. Burj Khalifa 25 minutes by car, Mall of the Emirates 15 minutes, international airport 35 minutes outside rush hour. JBR tram station 400 metres, Marina metro 10 minutes on foot. The area buzzes, chain restaurants (Cheesecake Factory, PF Chang's), beach shops, very busy at weekends with expat residents and Gulf tourists.
