A Relais & Châteaux riad-palace in the medina of Essaouira, where we sleep amid zellige and carved cedar, steps from the Atlantic ramparts.
L'Heure Bleue Palais - Relais & Châteaux

560.53 €
“Heated indoor pool under a Moorish glass roof, rare inside the fortified medina.”
L'Heure Bleue Palais occupies a former 19th-century palace restored in 2006, a Relais & Châteaux member since 2010. We enter through a studded door on Rue Ibn Babouta, 200 metres from Bab Marrakech, and discover three open-air patios, fountains in blue zellige from Fès, painted cedar ceilings, salons with moucharabieh screens. The 33 rooms and suites blend white tadelakt, carved woodwork, hand-embroidered fabrics, some with marble fireplaces or private rooftop terraces. The 300 m² spa offers a traditional hammam, argan-oil massages, an indoor pool under a glass roof (water at 28°C year-round). The gastronomic table serves revisited Moroccan cuisine, candlelit dinners in the main patio or on the panoramic terrace facing the ocean. From 560 € a night, a rate consistent with this level of finish and Relais & Châteaux address. We recommend it for a long weekend out of season, when Essaouira regains its calm as a fortified port ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend L'Heure Bleue to couples in their thirties and older seeking an authentic Moroccan palace without the outsized scale of Marrakech. It suits honeymoons, wedding anniversaries, wellness retreats, travellers attuned to craftsmanship and the history of the place. Families with children over 12 find their place (indoor pool, connecting suites), yet the atmosphere stays hushed, conducive to rest.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The palace dates from the 19th century, a former notable's residence restored in 2006 by architect Abdellatif Zine. Three patios in sequence, central fountains in Fès zellige, hand-painted cedar ceilings, carved moucharabiehs at the windows. Walls are polished white tadelakt, floors Carrara marble or Salé tiles, doors solid thuya. The scale remains intimate (33 rooms across three levels), with a 200 m² panoramic terrace over the medina rooftops.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The gastronomic restaurant serves Moroccan cuisine revisited by chef Abdelaziz Raiss, trained at Royal Mansour Marrakech. Continental breakfast served in the patios or in-room, à-la-carte lunch (pigeon pastilla, tagines with preserved lemon, grilled port fish), six-course tasting dinner by reservation. The tea bar offers Moroccan pastries and signature cocktails with local spices. 24-hour room service, with a simplified menu after 22h.
