A 5★ design in a former Baroque palace, between MuseumsQuartier and Ringstrasse, that bets everything on contemporary art and discreet service.
Hotel Sans Souci, Vienna

“Contemporary art collection in the communal spaces, with rotating works displayed like in a private gallery.”
The Hotel Sans Souci occupies a restored Baroque building a stone’s throw from the MuseumsQuartier, and we sense from the entrance the contemporary stance: white walls, designer furniture, artworks hung like in a collector’s home. The 63 rooms blend oak parquet, upholstered headboards and black marble bathrooms, some with freestanding bathtubs facing windows overlooking Burggasse. The 500 m² basement spa offers indoor pool, Finnish sauna and treatment rooms, open until 22h. The Veranda table serves revamped Austrian cuisine, buffet breakfast until 11h at weekends. From 369 € a night, it’s one of Vienna’s best-located design addresses, without the rigidity of the Ringstrasse’s historic palaces ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the Sans Souci to travellers seeking a Viennese 5★ without imperial gilding, more art gallery than Sissi palace. It’s an address for thirty-/fortysomething couples, culture weekends, dinners after the Opéra or the Leopold Museum, design and discreet business clientele. Families find their place here (connecting rooms, late breakfast), but the atmosphere remains hushed, adult.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The building dates from the 18th century, a former Baroque palace restored in 2012 with input from Viennese architects specialising in heritage rehabilitation. Classic ochre-and-white façade on Burggasse side, interiors entirely rethought in a contemporary gallery spirit: white walls, polished concrete, solid parquet, preserved 3.20 m ceiling heights. The 63 rooms spread over five floors, central glass lift, original restored staircase. Bespoke furniture and signed pieces (Poltrona Frau armchairs, Flos lighting), rotating art collection hung in the corridors like in a private collector’s home.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The Veranda restaurant occupies a glass-roofed room on the ground floor, opening onto an interior patio planted with bamboos and olive trees. Revamped Austrian cuisine by chef Alexander Mayer, trained at Steirereck: organic veal Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz in root vegetable broth, reinterpreted classic Viennese desserts. Buffet breakfast until 11h at weekends (eggs to order, local charcuterie, homemade pastries), 24/7 room service. The Sans Souci bar, bottle-green velvet armchairs and black marble counter, offers signature cocktails and 80 gin references.
