The Viennese palace that invented the Sachertorte in 1832, and that continues to serve breakfast to heads of state in its Empire salons.
Hotel Sacher Wien

“Direct view of the State Opera from the rooms on the Philharmoniker-Straße side, 30 metres from the neo-Renaissance façade.”
L'Hotel Sacher Wien has occupied the same building since 1876, opposite the Opéra, and we feel the weight of history from the red marble hall. The rooms blend original wood panelling, mural silks and Carrara marble bathrooms, some with freestanding bathtubs. The 500 m² basement spa offers hammam, Finnish sauna and treatment cabins. The Rote Bar serves 300,000 Sachertorte portions a year, recipe kept secret since Franz Sacher. Service remains impeccable, very Viennese school, from 760 € a night. We recommend an Opéra-side room, supplement justified. ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the Sacher to travellers seeking Vienna in its most classic version, without irony or design reinterpretation. It's a hotel for couples in their fifties and over, opera outings, discreet business dinners, wedding anniversaries. Families find their place here (interconnecting rooms available), but the clientele remains mostly adult, often habitués of European palaces.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The Sacher occupies a six-storey building constructed in 1876 by architect Wilhelm Fraenkel, Viennese neo-Renaissance style. Ocre ashlar stone façade, wrought-iron balconies, entrance hall in red Verona marble. Interiors renovated in 2018 after eighteen months of works, gilded woodwork, Bohemian crystal chandeliers, hand-woven carpets. The 152 rooms measure between 28 and 95 m², all different, some with listed stuccoed ceilings.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
Two tables at the Sacher: the Rote Bar for light lunch and Sachertorte (served from 8am to midnight), the Rote Salon for Viennese breakfast and gourmet dinner. The Rote Salon menu offers revisited Austrian cuisine, Wiener Schnitzel and Tafelspitz as signatures. Afternoon tea service remains an institution, book two weeks ahead in high season. Room service 24/7, full menu until 11pm.
