Zanzibar Palace Hotel

We recommend the Zanzibar Palace to couples seeking cultural authenticity rather than beach, and to travellers sensitive to historic architecture. It is an address for discreet honeymoons, romantic escapes of three to four nights before or after a Tanzanian safari. Families with children will prefer coastal resorts, here the atmosphere remains intimate and patrimonial.

The building dates from the 18th century, a time when Omani merchants controlled the spice trade. Typical Swahili architecture: coral and lime walls, carved teak doors imported from India, inner courtyards for natural ventilation. The ceilings are in makuti (braided palm leaves), the floors in zellige and Zanzibar stone. The hotel has around ten rooms spread over three levels, each different with period furniture sourced on the island.

The restaurant serves Swahili fusion cuisine in the inner courtyard under the frangipani trees. Fish and seafood bought each morning at the Darajani market, prepared with local spices (pilipili, tamarind, coconut). Continental breakfast with tropical fruit, chapati and Tanzanian coffee. Room service operates until 22h, reduced but efficient menu.

The Zanzibar Palace stands in the Kiponda district, historic heart of Stone Town listed UNESCO. The seafront and Forodhani gardens are three minutes on foot, the Darajani market five. Around, narrow alleys lined with Arab houses, antique shops, Zanzibari art galleries. The international airport lies 8 km away, 20 minutes by car depending on traffic. The district is lively by day (calls to prayer, street vendors), calm after 21h.
