The Neela Boutique Hotel Stone Town

The building dates from the 18th century, typical of Swahili merchant houses in Stone Town: fossilised coral façade, carved teak doors, inner courtyard with well. The restoration has preserved the mangrove wood beams, wall niches and original terrazzo floors. The rooms are arranged over three levels, some with wrought-iron balconies overlooking the alley. The rooftop adds a contemporary floor, wooden terrace with clear views, rare in the dense fabric of the old town.

The restaurant serves revisited Swahili cuisine, with a menu that changes according to arrivals from the Darajani market: grilled octopus with spices, coconut-cardamom fish curry, seafood pilau. Breakfast is taken on the rooftop, tropical fruit, mandazi (Zanzibari doughnuts), local coffee. Room service is available, handy for late returns after a night-time wander through Stone Town. No formal bar, but the rooftop serves as a lounge in the evening, cocktails based on rum and tamarind juice.

The Neela stands in Shangani, south-west district of Stone Town, between the seafront and the labyrinth of trading alleys. Zanzibar port is a two-minute walk, Darajani market five minutes, the House of Wonders and the Old Fort ten minutes. Abeid Amani Karume international airport is 8 km, 20 minutes by taxi. The district remains lively in the evening, restaurant terraces on Forodhani Gardens, art galleries and spice shops in the adjacent alleys. No metro or reliable public transport, everything is done on foot or by taxi.
