The only palace in Stone Town that turns a 17th-century Omani trading post into an urban beach address, pool over the Indian Ocean.
Park Hyatt Zanzibar
From
831.742 €
“Infinity pool on stilts facing Stone Town harbour, the only one in the old town with direct sea access.”
The Park Hyatt Zanzibar occupies two restored colonial buildings on Shangani Street, at the north-west corner of Stone Town. We sleep in rooms with four-metre ceilings, Swahili teak wood, white marble bathrooms, views over the ocean or the medina roofs. The infinity pool on stilts extends fifteen metres above the water, a rare privilege in a Unesco-listed town where building is forbidden. The Anantara spa offers massages with Zanzibar spices (clove, cardamom), cabins with views over the strait. The service is attentive without being intrusive, staff speak Swahili, English, Italian. From 832 € a night, we pay for the unique location and history, not the design (classic Hyatt, no surprises). Book it for the seafront spot in the old town, not for innovation ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the Park Hyatt to travellers who want the comfort of an international chain in a historic setting, without giving up the beach. It is an address for couples on honeymoon or travellers aged 40 and over looking for a luxurious base before a safari or beach stay in Nungwi. Families find their place (connecting rooms, secure pool), yet the clientele remains mainly adult, between heritage and leisure.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The Park Hyatt Zanzibar brings together two adjoining buildings: Mambo Msiige, former 17th-century Omani trading post, and Zamani Residence, 19th-century Swahili merchant house. Complete restoration in 2015 by Jestico + Whiles, which kept the carved Zanzibari doors, makuti ceilings (woven palm), wrought-iron balconies. Sober contemporary interiors: white Carrara marble, local teak wood, Designers Guild fabrics, bespoke furniture. The 67 rooms range from 42 to 280 m² (Zamani suite), all different according to the original structure.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The Livingstone Terrace occupies the rooftop, Swahili-Mediterranean fusion cuisine (grilled octopus with tamarind, seafood risotto, lobster curry). Continental and à la carte breakfast buffet, harbour view. The Dining Room offers an Italian menu (wood-fired pizzas, fresh pasta, catch of the day). Zamani bar for spiced cocktails (gin-ginger-cardamom, bourbon vanilla rum), open until midnight. 24-hour room service, reduced menu after 23h.
