“Guerlain Spa library installed in the former vaulted bank, pool under Art Nouveau glass roof.”
The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam occupies six Golden Age Dutch townhouses, gabled facades aligned along the city's most beautiful canal. We enter through a veined white marble lobby, five-metre ceilings, Bohemian crystal chandeliers suspended above a monumental staircase. The rooms blend restored period panelling and signed contemporary furniture, some overlooking the Herengracht with original sash windows. The spa pool occupies a former vault room, exposed brick vaulting and zenithal glass roof. The Goldfinch restaurant serves reimagined Dutch cuisine, North Sea produce and Westland vegetables. From 2 182 € a night, we pay as much for the address as the listed building. Impeccable service, discreet clientele, one of Amsterdam's few palaces that merits the title ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the Waldorf Astoria to travellers seeking a human-scale palace, far from the impersonal large hotels of the canal belt. It's an address for couples on anniversary weekends, Golden Age architecture enthusiasts, business clients who want to impress without ostentation. Families are accepted but the clientele remains mostly adult, over forties, discreet profile.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The building unites six canal houses constructed between 1650 and 1665, listed historic monuments. Red-brick facades with stepped gables, period sash windows, original carriage doors. Interiors restored in 2014 by GA Design studio: 17th-century panelling preserved, solid oak parquet, Carrara marble fireplaces. The former Lippmann, Rosenthal & Co. bank occupies the rear wing, its vault room transformed into a spa. Intimate scale despite the 93 rooms, no endless corridors.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The Goldfinch restaurant occupies the former reception salon, canal-view windows and monumental fireplace. Contemporary Dutch cuisine by chef Sidney Schutte: smoked Volendam herring, IJsselmeer eel, Limburg white asparagus in season. The Vault Bar serves cocktails and champagnes in the former strong room, exposed brick vaulting and 1923 armoured door preserved. Breakfast served until 11am, 24/7 room service.
