A 15th-century convent turned palace, between canals and Red Light District, where Dutch history is read in the panelling.

“Indoor pool under 15th-century vaults, remnant of the Convent of the Sisters of Saint Agnes.”
Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam occupies a 15th-century convent on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal, two minutes from the Red Light District and Nieuwmarkt. We cross paved courtyards, vaulted galleries, panelled salons where William of Orange signed treaties. The rooms blend original beams and contemporary furniture, some overlook the interior garden, others the canal. The pool under the medieval vaults justifies the detour on its own. The Soin de Soi spa offers Carita treatments and hammam, open until 22h. From 482 € a night, we pay as much for the historic address as for the modern comfort ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the Grand to travellers seeking a historic palace without forgoing contemporary comfort. It's an address for couples in their thirties and up, cultural weekends, discreet anniversaries, high-end business trips. Families find their place here thanks to interconnecting rooms and the garden, but the clientele remains mostly adult.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The building was convent of the Sisters of Saint Agnes (1425), then town hall, council of the Dutch Admiralty, finally palace in 1992. The Gothic vaults, carved beams, blue stone fireplaces are original. Sofitel restored the whole in 2012: solid oak parquet, crystal chandeliers, Roche Bobois furniture. The 177 rooms range from 28 to 90 m², distributed around five interior courtyards.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
Two tables at the Grand: Bridges, gastronomic restaurant directed by chef Raoul Meuwese, French cuisine reinterpreted with Dutch products, open midday and evening. The Oriole Bar serves signature cocktails and tapas until midnight, intimate ambience under coffered ceiling. Breakfast buffet served in the former council room, garden view. Room service 24h/24, simplified menu after 23h.
