Why the Maldives remain the benchmark for the island resort
The Maldivian archipelago counts 1 192 coral islands spread over 26 atolls, of which only 200 are inhabited and around a hundred transformed into private resorts. This fragmented geography imposes a simple rule: a resort occupies an entire island, with no visible neighbour, no local village nearby. We sleep facing the lagoon, we dive from our private pontoon, we dine with our feet in the sand without crossing other establishments. Naladhu Private Island pushes this concept to the extreme with only 20 villas on 900 metres of islet, Six Senses Kanuhura spreads its 13 hectares in the Lhaviyani atoll, far from the tourist circuits of the south. The Booking ratings reflect this flawless execution: Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa displays 9.9/10, Emerald Faarufushi nears perfection on the Raa atoll, an area still preserved with only a handful of resorts.
What sets the Maldives apart from other luxury beach destinations is the total absence of compromise on isolation. No coastal road, no public beach, no jet-ski passing in front of your villa. The mandatory transfer by seaplane or speedboat from Malé creates a clean break with the outside world. JA Manafaru lies 450 km north of the capital, 70 minutes of flight over the atolls, in the still discreet Haa Alif. Fushifaru occupies an island 200 metres by 400 in Lhaviyani, we walk around it in 15 minutes. This reduced scale imposes radical intimacy: we cross a maximum of ten couples at the restaurant, the spa takes only two simultaneous bookings, the diving centre organises tailor-made outings according to the tides.
When to go: seasonality and monsoon in the Maldives
The Maldives experience two distinct seasons, dictated by the Indian Ocean monsoons. The dry season runs from November to April, with peak attendance between December and March. The northern atolls (Lhaviyani, Raa, Haa Alif) enjoy almost constant sunshine, winds are light, the sea like glass. This is the period when resorts display their highest rates and when we must book 6 to 9 months in advance for the most sought-after overwater villas. Constance Moofushi in the South Ari atoll sees its water villas go first, OBLU SELECT Lobigili in North Malé shows full from October for the end-of-year festivities.
The south-west monsoon arrives in May and lasts until October, bringing short but intense showers, especially in June and July. The southern atolls are more exposed than those in the north. This period divides travellers: some flee the rainfall, others take advantage of rates reduced by 30 to 40 % and lower attendance. Veligandu in Rasdhoo and Cocoon in Lhaviyani remain accessible all year, with diving conditions that stay excellent despite the swell. The transition months, April-May and October-November, offer the best compromise: still clement weather, intermediate rates, less saturated resorts.
| Month | Weather | Attendance | Average villa rate |
|---|
| December-March | Dry, 28-30°C | Very high | 1 200-2 500 €/night |
| April-May | Transition, rare showers | Medium | 800-1 500 €/night |
| June-September | Monsoon, daily showers | Low | 600-1 200 €/night |
| October-November | Transition, improvement | Medium | 900-1 600 €/night |
How to choose your atoll and resort
The 26 Maldivian atolls are not all equal. The North and South Malé atolls concentrate the majority of historic resorts, accessible by speedboat from Velana airport (30 to 60 minutes). OBLU SELECT Lobigili is 45 minutes by boat, Naladhu only 25 minutes. This proximity reduces transfer costs but increases maritime traffic. The central atolls (North and South Ari, Rasdhoo) offer a compromise: Constance Moofushi in South Ari requires 30 minutes by seaplane, Veligandu in Rasdhoo 45 minutes. These zones are renowned for diving, with coral drop-offs and passes frequented by manta rays.
The northern atolls (Lhaviyani, Raa, Haa Alif) remain the most discreet. Six Senses Kanuhura, Fushifaru and Cocoon in Lhaviyani (130 km from Malé, 40-45 minutes by seaplane) see fewer competing resorts pass by. Emerald Faarufushi and Emerald Maldives in Raa (45 minutes by seaplane) benefit from an area still little developed. JA Manafaru in Haa Alif (450 km, 70 minutes flight) pushes isolation to the extreme, with seaplane transfer included from 7 nights booked. The further north we go, the more preserved the reefs, the fewer other boats we cross during snorkelling outings.
The choice of resort then depends on the format sought:
- All-inclusive deluxe: Emerald Maldives (9.9/10), Emerald Faarufushi, Constance Moofushi, OBLU SELECT Lobigili, Cocoon. All-inclusive formula with multiple restaurants, bars, water activities, spa sometimes included. Controlled budget, no surprises on the final bill.
- Radical intimacy: Naladhu (20 villas), Fushifaru (human scale), Veligandu (overwater bungalows with no other hotel in sight). For couples who flee resorts of 100+ villas.
- Wellness & eco-responsible: Six Senses Kanuhura with its wellness DNA, sustainable materials, organic local products, holistic spa. No bling-bling, assumed natural approach.
Overwater villas vs beach villas: what they do not tell you
The water villas (overwater villas) embody the Maldivian fantasy: private terrace above the lagoon, direct ladder into the turquoise water, 180° view over the horizon. Constance Moofushi and Veligandu have made it their signature, Emerald Faarufushi and Emerald Maldives integrate them into their all-inclusive packages. But these villas have their constraints: full sun exposure all day (intense heat in the afternoon), noise of waves and wind at night (some love it, others sleep badly), total absence of natural shade (we must go inside to protect ourselves). Private pools on stilts remain small, often symbolic. And the rate climbs 30 to 50 % compared with an equivalent beach villa.
The beach villas offer more space, private tropical gardens, larger pools, intimacy reinforced by the vegetation. Naladhu and Six Senses Kanuhura favour this format with generous plots, JA Manafaru proposes family beach villas with several bedrooms. We reach the lagoon in 30 seconds on foot, we benefit from the shade of the palm trees, we sleep in absolute calm. For families with children, this is often the most practical choice: space to play, secure pool, no risk of falling into the ocean from the terrace.
The ideal compromise: book a beach villa with direct lagoon access (some have a private pontoon) or alternate between the two formats if the stay exceeds 7 nights. Emerald Maldives and Emerald Faarufushi allow this type of combination in their extended all-inclusive packages.
Diving and snorkelling: the best spots by atoll
The Maldives rank among the 10 best diving destinations in the world, with visibility of 20 to 40 metres, nutrient-rich currents that attract large marine life, and coral reefs still preserved in the northern atolls. Constance Moofushi in South Ari positions itself as a diving-dedicated resort, with a 5-star PADI centre, daily outings on drop-offs and passes, and the possibility of spotting whale sharks between May and November. Fushifaru in Lhaviyani also bets on this asset, with house reefs accessible by mask and snorkel from the beach.
Snorkelling requires no certification and offers spectacular encounters. All selected resorts have a house reef less than 50 metres from the villas. Six Senses Kanuhura organises guided snorkelling outings towards the passes where manta rays feed on plankton. Emerald Maldives and Emerald Faarufushi include equipment and excursions in their all-inclusive packages. Veligandu and Naladhu propose private outings in dhoni (traditional boat) towards the outer reefs.
The manta rays frequent the Ari and Baa atolls between May and November, monsoon period when plankton abounds. The whale sharks concentrate in South Ari all year round, with a peak between August and November. The turtles nest on the deserted beaches of the northern atolls between March and September. Each resort has a marine biologist who organises environmental education sessions and responsible observation outings.
Gastronomy: what we really eat on a private atoll
Maldivian resorts import 90 % of their fresh produce by plane or boat from Sri Lanka, India, Dubai or Singapore. This complex logistics explains the high restaurant rates: allow 80 to 150 € per person for dinner in a signature restaurant, excluding drinks. All-inclusive packages such as those at Emerald Maldives, Emerald Faarufushi, Constance Moofushi, OBLU SELECT Lobigili and Cocoon include all meals, alcoholic drinks (except champagne and fine wines), and sometimes speciality restaurants. A simple calculation: if we drink two cocktails a day and dine at the restaurant every evening, all-inclusive becomes worthwhile from 4 nights.
High-end resorts focus on international chefs and menus that blend Asian, Mediterranean and Maldivian cuisine. Le Nautilus employs one of the best chefs in the archipelago, with a menu that changes according to arrivals and client wishes. Six Senses Kanuhura favours organic local products (line-caught fish, tropical fruits, aromatic herbs grown on site), in a wellness approach consistent with the brand's DNA. Naladhu offers a butler service that organises private beach dinners, with a personalised menu.
The feet-in-the-sand restaurants remain the signature experience: table set at the edge of the lagoon, tiki torches, discreet service, international wine list. Constance Moofushi and Veligandu excel at this exercise. But beware of supplements: a romantic private dinner costs between 200 and 500 € per couple, excluding drinks. All-inclusive resorts sometimes include one or two such evenings in their honeymoon packages.
| Resort | Formula | Restaurants | Particularity |
|---|
| Emerald Maldives | All-inclusive deluxe | 5 + lounge bar | Premium drinks included |
| Constance Moofushi | All-inclusive | 2 + bars | Diving included |
| Le Nautilus | À la carte | Signature, starred chef | Personalised menu |
| Six Senses Kanuhura | Half-board+ | Organic, local, wellness | Products grown on site |
| OBLU SELECT Lobigili | All-inclusive premium | 3 + bars | Speedboat transfer included |
Realistic budget for 5 nights in a Maldivian resort
The Maldives remain an expensive destination, even in low season. For 5 nights in an overwater villa in a 5-star resort, allow between 4 000 and 12 000 € for a couple, depending on the season, the level of luxury and the chosen package. Breakdown of items:
- Villa: 600 to 2 500 € per night according to season and category. Cocoon and OBLU SELECT Lobigili start at 600-800 €/night in all-inclusive low season. Naladhu, Le Nautilus, Six Senses Kanuhura reach 1 500-2 500 €/night in high season.
- Transfer: 300 to 700 € per person return by seaplane (included at JA Manafaru from 7 nights, at OBLU SELECT Lobigili by speedboat). Distant atolls cost more.
- Meals & drinks: 0 € in all-inclusive, 150-250 € per day and per couple on half-board (one dinner + drinks).
- Spa & activities: 100-300 € per treatment, 80-150 € for a private dive or snorkelling outing (often included in all-inclusive).
- Extras: excursions (big-game fishing, dolphin cruise, private sandbank) between 200 and 800 € according to format.
Deluxe all-inclusive packages simplify the calculation and avoid unpleasant surprises. Emerald Maldives (9.9/10) offers 5-night packages from 5 500 € for two in low season, all included except spa. Constance Moofushi displays similar rates with diving included. Conversely, Naladhu and Le Nautilus on half-board easily reach 10 000-12 000 € for 5 nights once restaurants, transfers and extras are added.
Transfers: seaplane, speedboat or domestic flight
Velana international airport (Malé) serves as the single hub for all resorts. As soon as we leave the plane, three transfer options according to distance:
Speedboat: for the North and South Malé atolls only. Journey of 25 to 60 minutes, cost of 100 to 200 € per person return. Naladhu (25 min), OBLU SELECT Lobigili (45 min, included). Comfortable, fast, but limited to nearby resorts. Flexible departures according to flight arrivals.
Seaplane: for all atolls beyond 70 km. Journey of 30 to 70 minutes according to distance, cost of 300 to 700 € per person return. Constance Moofushi (30 min, 350 €), Six Senses Kanuhura (40 min), Emerald Maldives and Emerald Faarufushi (45 min), JA Manafaru (70 min, included from 7 nights). Trans Maldivian Airways seaplanes fly only by day (6am-5pm), which sometimes requires a night in Malé if the international flight arrives late. Spectacular view over the atolls, but noisy and cramped cabin (15-20 passengers).
Domestic flight + speedboat: for very distant atolls, some resorts offer a domestic flight with Maldivian (30-45 min) then a speedboat (15-30 min). Cheaper than seaplane (200-300 € per person), but less practical with a connection.
The advice: include the transfer cost in the total budget and favour resorts that include it (JA Manafaru, OBLU SELECT Lobigili) or that offer packages with transfer offered during promotions.
Practical tips before booking
Book 6 to 9 months in advance for high season (December-March), especially for water villas and festive periods. Resorts show full from October for Christmas and New Year. In low season (June-September), we can book 2-3 months ahead and negotiate upgrades.
Check what is included: some resorts display low rates but charge everything separately (transfers, activities, spa, speciality restaurants). Deluxe all-inclusive packages such as Emerald Maldives, Emerald Faarufushi, Constance Moofushi offer better budget visibility.
Plan a night in Malé if your international flight arrives after 4pm or departs before 9am: seaplanes fly only by day. Resorts offer partner hotels at the airport (80-150 € per night).
Pack reef-safe sunscreen: classic creams are banned in several resorts to protect the corals. Favour mineral formulas without oxybenzone.
Anticipate activities: dive outings, spa treatments, private beach dinners are often booked several days in advance, especially in high season. Contact the resort before arrival to block slots.
Families with children: check the minimum age (some resorts such as Naladhu accept children from 8 years only) and the presence of a kids club. OBLU SELECT Lobigili, JA Manafaru, Emerald Maldives are family-friendly with clubs, shallow pools, children's menus.
Connectivity: wifi is free in all selected resorts, but the speed remains limited (video conferencing difficult). Enjoy the disconnection 😌
