“Only five rooms in a restored traditional dwelling, integrated café for breakfast facing the interior garden.”
Kazeno Heritage occupies a 19th-century machiya on Nene-no-Michi, the cobbled lane that climbs towards Kiyomizu-dera. We pass through a linen noren, remove our shoes, discover a corridor in polished hinoki wood that smells of cedar and beeswax. The five rooms blend original tatami, futons on Western slatted bases, bathrooms in grey Oya stone, deep ofuro bathtubs. The ground-floor café serves a light kaiseki breakfast, matcha tea whisked before you, view over the moss and maple garden. The bill climbs quickly: from 530 € a night, but the house remains compact, silent, run by a team of three who speak English and French. We book for total immersion in Higashiyama, not for the services of a palace ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend Kazeno Heritage to couples in their thirties and up seeking the machiya experience without forgoing Western comforts, discreet honeymoons, creative retreats. The house suits travellers who embrace the intimate scale (no spa, no gourmet restaurant, no 24-hour porter), prioritise architectural authenticity and location in historic Higashiyama. Families with young children will find the space too delicate, the stairs steep, the atmosphere too hushed.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The machiya dates from the 1880s, façade in tar-blackened wood, grey kawara tile roof, interior passageway opening onto a tsuboniwa (pocket garden). Restoration completed in 2022: original framework preserved, exposed cryptomeria beams, shoji partitions in reinforced washi paper, igusa tatami floors woven in Kumamoto. The five rooms occupy two levels, between 18 and 32 m², all different. Low ceilings (2.20 m), light filtered through the shoji, discreet air conditioning built into the alcoves.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The ground-floor café serves breakfast only, included in the rate: light morning kaiseki (seven small dishes, koshihikari rice, miso soup, grilled fish, tsukemono), sencha green tea or whisked matcha on request. No lunch or dinner on site, but the concierge books at Kikunoi Roan (three Michelin stars, 12 minutes on foot) or Gion Karyo (intimate kaiseki, 18 covers). In-room champagne and premium saké service until 22h, cellar limited to around ten references.
