18th-century machiya converted into a six-bedroom guesthouse, in the heart of old merchant Kyoto.
Marufukuro
From
330.414 €
“Original cryptomeria wood architecture, interior garden with koi pond, steps from Nishiki market.”
Marufukuro occupies a 1780 machiya restored in 2019, exposed beams, shoji in washi paper, original tatamis in three bedrooms. We bed down on futon or Western bed according to category, windows overlooking the zen garden or the cobbled alley. The kaiseki breakfast is served in the communal room with lacquered woodwork, from 330 € a night. Just six bedrooms, we advise booking four months ahead for the cherry blossoms. The Wi-Fi works well, silence is total after 9pm. An address to understand Kyoto without pastiche, with the honesty of a building that has lived ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend Marufukuro to couples in their thirties and above seeking immersion in historic Kyoto without the folklore. It's an address for travellers accustomed to ryokan, who accept the lack of 24/7 service and the simplicity of the facilities. Families with children over 12 find their place here, but the atmosphere remains contemplative, ill-suited to young children.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The machiya dates from 1780, blackened wood facade typical of Shimogyo-ku merchant houses. Interior over two levels, ceiling height of 2.40 m on the ground floor, paulownia wood staircase. 2019 restoration respecting the codes: exposed beams, sliding shoji, tokonoma alcove in every bedroom. Total area of 180 m², through interior garden of 40 m² with pond and vegetation.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The kaiseki breakfast is included, served between 8am and 9.30am in the communal room. Seasonal vegetarian menu prepared by the owner: miso soup, Niigata rice, Nishiki market pickled vegetables, silken tofu. No on-site restaurant, but the communal kitchen allows reheating dishes. Sencha green tea and filtered water available all day.
