Desa Hay Canggu

We recommend Desa Hay to thirtysomething and fortysomething couples who want Canggu without its packed beach clubs or its digital nomads in co-working spaces. It's an address for discreet honeymoons, five-day wellness retreats, birthdays celebrated without the social whirl. Families with children over ten find their place here (the pool is supervised, rooms spacious), but the clientele remains mostly adult and in search of calm.

Desa Hay opened in 2021, Balinese contemporary architecture signed by a Seminyak studio (clean lines, alang-alang roofs, lava stone walls). The communal spaces play on transparency: lobby open to the garden, restaurant under bamboo pergola, no air conditioning in communal areas (natural ventilation). The twelve rooms occupy two single-storey pavilions, between 38 and 55 m², all with minimum 12 m² terraces, king-size solid teak beds, outdoor volcanic stone showers. The scale remains residential, it could be mistaken for a private villa rented for the season.

One restaurant on site, Indonesian-Mediterranean fusion cuisine served from breakfast (7am–11am) to dinner (6pm–10pm). Breakfast à la carte included in the rate: nasi goreng, açai bowls, banana pancakes, cold-pressed juices. The chef works with Pererenan producers (organic vegetables, Jimbaran fish landed that morning), short menu renewed weekly. Room service available 24/7, same menu as the restaurant. No formal bar, but the team whips up cocktails and mocktails on request until 11pm.

Desa Hay stands in Pererenan, the agricultural neighbourhood north of Canggu, 1.5 km from the coast and 8 km from Seminyak. Echo Beach ten minutes by scooter, Tanah Lot (temple on the water) twenty minutes by car. Ngurah Rai airport is 45 minutes without traffic, one and a half hours at peak times (shuttle included). The neighbourhood remains calm, rice fields still cultivated, a few local warungs, no nightlife. Rent a scooter (150,000 rupiah/day, 9 €) or use the hotel shuttle to reach Canggu centre and its beach clubs.
