“Spa of 1 000 m² within vaulted cellars from the XVIᵉ century, with heated pool and hammam beneath exposed stone.”
L'Alchymist Grand Hotel and Spa occupies a baroque palace from 1738 beneath Prague Castle, a stone's throw from Vrtba Gardens. We step into a maximalist decor: mythological frescoes on the ceiling, gilded stuccos, Venetian furniture, Murano chandeliers that carry their weight. The 33 rooms mix sculpted four-poster beds, garnet velvet, Italian marble bathrooms, some with views over the roofs of Malá Strana. The spa occupies three levels of medieval cellars, heated indoor pool, Finnish sauna, treatment cabins under stone vaults. The Booking rating climbs to 9,3/10 from 907 reviews, which owes much to the singularity of the place and the attentive service. From 244 € a night, a rate justified by the location and the scale of the spa ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the Alchymist to couples seeking theatrical decor without tipping into kitsch, and to spa lovers who want something beyond a standardised wellness centre. An address for romantic weekends, birthdays, late honeymoons, travellers who appreciate tangible history and layered interiors. Families are welcome, yet the atmosphere stays hushed, decidedly adult.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The palace dates from 1738, built for a Czech aristocrat in late baroque style. Three-storey ochre façade, paved inner courtyard, monumental stone staircase with wrought-iron handrail. Interiors restored in 2006: mythological frescoes on salon ceilings, gilded stuccos, painted woodwork, Venetian and Flemish furniture sourced from afar. The medieval cellars beneath the building reach back to the XVIᵉ century, brick and exposed-stone vaults preserved for the spa.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The restaurant Aquarius serves revisited Czech cuisine and a few European classics, a concise menu that shifts with the market. Wine cellar of 300 references, strong proportion of Moravian and Slovakian crus little known outside the region. Buffet breakfast served beneath baroque frescoes, with local charcuterie, house pastries, eggs to order. Room service available 24/7, reduced menu after midnight.
