A guesthouse with eight rooms perched in the cobbled streets of Santa Teresa, the bohemian district that overlooks Rio.

“Infinity pool facing Guanabara Bay and Sugarloaf, open until sunset.”
Vila Santa Teresa occupies a restored colonial mansion on the heights of Rio, at 300 metres altitude. We sleep in eight rooms spread between the main house and two pavilions, all different, some with private terrace overlooking the bay. The spa offers massages and treatments in a separate pavilion, the infinity pool captures the late afternoon light on Sugarloaf. Materials are simple: raw wood, white linen, Portuguese cement tiles, vintage furniture. Service remains discreet, the atmosphere that of a private home rather than a classic hotel. From 488 € per night, breakfast included. We come here for the confidential address and the view, not for the facilities of an urban palace ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend Vila Santa Teresa to couples seeking an intimate address away from the towers of Copacabana and Ipanema. It is a hotel for travellers who favour the authenticity of the bohemian district over immediate beach proximity, happy to take a taxi down to Leblon. Families with young children will find access via the cobbled lanes less practical than a seafront hotel.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The main house dates from the early 20th century, when Santa Teresa was the residential quarter of Rio's bourgeoisie. Restored Portuguese colonial architecture: whitewashed walls, red-tiled roofs, colonnaded verandas. Interiors blend Brazilian 1950s furniture with contemporary pieces, dark wood floors, 3.5-metre ceilings. The annex pavilions were added during the conversion to a hotel, in the same architectural spirit.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The hotel restaurant serves breakfast and dinner by reservation, contemporary Brazilian cuisine with market produce. No signature chef, short menu that changes with arrivals. Breakfast is taken on the terrace facing the bay: tropical fruits, tapioca, pão de queijo, fresh juices. For other meals, Santa Teresa offers a dozen independent tables less than ten minutes' walk away, including Aprazível and Térèze.

Location & access
Where the hotel sits in Rio de Janeiro
Vila Santa Teresa stands in the eponymous district, on the hills above Rio's historic centre. The yellow tram (bondinho) passes 200 metres away, the Arcos da Lapa a fifteen-minute downhill walk. Copacabana and Ipanema are twenty-five minutes by taxi, the colonial centre (Cinelândia, Confeitaria Colombo) ten minutes. The neighbourhood is quiet in the evening, residential and artistic, with painters' studios and small galleries in the cobbled lanes. No metro nearby, the hotel organises transfers.
