The MAY DE VILLE Lakeside Hotel stands at the corner of Gia Ngu street, thirty metres from Hoan Kiem lake, the beating heart of Hanoi. We slept in a room on the sixth floor: dark parquet, firm bedding, bay window over the tiled roofs and the trees of the lake. The spa occupies two levels with traditional Vietnamese massage cabins, the rooftop pool stays open until 21h. The service is attentive without being intrusive, the staff speak fluent English. The MAY DE VILLE Lakeside occupies a contemporary nine-storey building, sober architecture typical of 2000s Vietnamese design. Dark wood interiors, beige marble in communal areas, glass lifts. The rooms blend revisited colonial furniture and modern equipment (silent air-conditioning, digital safe). Standard ceiling height (2,60 m), yet the bay windows compensate with natural light and open views over the lake or Gia Ngu street.

Restaurants, bar, service
The ground-floor restaurant serves correct Vietnamese and international cuisine without gastronomic pretension. Buffet breakfast with fresh pho prepared in front of you, omelettes to order, tropical fruit. Room service operates until 22h30, reduced yet efficient menu (spring rolls, fried rice, club sandwich). We preferred to dine out in the neighbourhood: a dozen excellent local tables less than five minutes on foot.

The MAY DE VILLE stands on Gia Ngu street, a quiet artery that runs along the east side of Hoan Kiem lake. Ngoc Son Temple three minutes on foot, Saint-Joseph Cathedral seven minutes, the 36 Streets quarter ten minutes. At weekends the streets around the lake become pedestrian with street performances and Vietnamese families. No metro in Hanoi, yet taxis and Grab are plentiful. Noi Bai airport 45 minutes by free hotel shuttle, railway station fifteen minutes by car.
