Bangkok’s historic palace closes its doors in January 2025 after 48 years of service, last chance to sleep in a legend before demolition.
Dusit Thani Bangkok
From
306.597 €
“Rooftop pool with 360° view over Silom and the Chao Phraya, open since 1970, one of the capital’s first rooftops.”
Dusit Thani Bangkok occupies the crossroads of Rama IV and Silom since 1970, first Thai palace built after independence. We sleep in a period witness, classic rooms with teak parquet and beige marble bathrooms, some tired but impeccably kept. The pool on the top floor remains the highlight, clear view over the Sathorn skyscrapers and the river in the distance. The spa offers traditional Thai massages in carved wood cabins, hushed atmosphere far from the Silom tumult. From 307 € per night, rate justified by the historic address and impeccable service, old-school training. The restaurants serve classic Thai cuisine and a decent international buffet without being memorable. We book for the history and nostalgia, not for contemporary design.
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend Dusit Thani to nostalgic travellers who want to live a piece of history before its disappearance, and to Bangkok regulars curious to compare the old palace with today’s design towers. It’s an address for couples in their fifties and over, businessmen loyal since the 80s, mid-century architecture buffs. Families find their place thanks to spacious rooms and the pool, but the atmosphere remains that of a classic business hotel.
The building
Architecture and interiors
Dusit Thani is a 22-storey tower built in 1970 by architect Chaiyot Suwanno, sober international style with concrete facade and strip windows. Interiors in golden teak, beige marble and bronze, typical of 1970s Thai luxury. Lobby with massive columns and coffered ceiling, monumental marble staircase. Rooms between 32 and 85 m², dark teak parquet, classic carved wood furniture, ageing but functional bathrooms.
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
Three tables at Dusit Thani: Benjarong for royal Thai cuisine in blue-and-gold porcelain decor, Thien Duong for Vietnamese, Pavilion Chinese for Cantonese. Devarana Spa offers a light detox menu served in cabin after treatments. International breakfast buffet at Pavilion, fresh tropical fruits and egg station on demand. Thara Thong, top-floor bar near the pool, serves classic cocktails with panoramic view until 23h.
