1892 palace facing the gare do Rossio, last witness of Belle Époque Lisbon before the earthquake.

“Monumental staircase in pink Estremoz marble, Art Nouveau stained-glass windows listed as a national monument since 1910.”
L'Hotel Avenida Palace has held the Praça dos Restauradores since 1892, the only palace survivor of the 1755 earthquake to have kept its original interiors. We climb the staircase under the stained-glass windows signed Leandro Braga, pink marble everywhere, gilded stucco, Bohemian crystal chandeliers. The rooms mix Belle Époque mouldings and renovated bathrooms, some overlook the Tagus in the distance, others the Rua 1. De Dezembro (effective double glazing). The palace has kept its bourgeois soul, no rooftop or cutting-edge spa, just a compact fitness centre in the basement. From 363 € a night, it's the price of a historical witness in the city centre, not a design hotel. We come for the address and the architecture, not the modern facilities ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the Avenida Palace to travellers who prefer patrimonial authenticity to design spas, couples in their forties and up, Belle Époque architecture enthusiasts, business trips seeking character without paying international chain prices. It's a hotel for those who accept that a centenary palace has rooms of uneven sizes and renovated bathrooms without heated marble. Families find their place (communicating rooms possible), but the clientele remains mostly adult, often Portuguese or European in transit.
The building
Architecture and interiors
L'Hotel Avenida Palace occupies a six-storey neoclassical building constructed in 1892 by architect José Luís Monteiro, the one behind Lisbon's Natural History Museum. Façade in pale lioz stone, bow-windows on the Praça dos Restauradores, entrance under wrought-iron canopy. Intact Belle Époque interiors: monumental staircase in pink Estremoz marble, Art Nouveau stained-glass windows signed Leandro Braga (listed 1910), gilded stucco, Brazilian mahogany woodwork. The rooms range from 18 to 45 m², all different, some with original alcoves, others renovated in the 2000s (parquet, contemporary fabrics, travertine bathrooms).
At the table
Restaurants, bar, service
The palace has a classic restaurant on the ground floor, traditional Portuguese cuisine (bacalhau, arroz de pato), dining room service with white tablecloths, local clientele at lunch. Continental buffet breakfast served under the Belle Époque salon's chandeliers, decent pastries, Portuguese charcuterie, eggs to order. Cocktail bar in the lobby, green velvet armchairs, list of ports and ginjas. Room service available 24/7, reduced menu after 10pm.
