Canaves Sunday pushes Cycladic minimalism to radical purity, without concession to folklore.
Canaves Sunday

“Suites carved into Oia's cliff with private suspended pools facing the caldera, direct view of Greece's most photographed sunset.”
Canaves Sunday occupies a discreet enclave on the northern tip of Oia, where the cliff plunges 300 metres into the caldera. We tested a 45 m² troglodyte suite: limewashed walls, polished concrete floor, bespoke whitened oak furniture, Tinos stone bathtub facing the void. The communal infinity pool follows the curve of the volcanic rock, heated water from April to October. The silence impresses, no crowd noise despite the village's proximity. Suites with private pools justify the rate from 950 € per night, especially in high season when Oia becomes impassable after 5pm. We recommend west-facing rooms for the sunset without leaving the terrace. One of the few hotels in Santorini where design doesn't sacrifice comfort for style ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend Canaves Sunday to couples seeking isolation without renouncing service, typically honeymoons or anniversaries after 35. The hotel suits fans of pared-back design who tolerate the lack of spa and on-site gastronomic table. Families with children will find the place too minimalist and the rock-hewn stairs impractical.
The building
Architecture and interiors
Canaves Sunday rehabilitates a cluster of 18th-century troglodyte houses, typical of Oia's captaincies. Suites burrow 4 to 8 metres into the volcanic rock, original cradle vaults preserved. 2019 renovation by Athenian architect Alexandros Kapsimalis: light grey polished concrete, solid oak joinery, bathrooms in Tinos stone quarried 12 km away. No corridors, each suite has independent access via external staircase.

Restaurants, bar, service
No on-site restaurant. Canaves Sunday offers a continental breakfast served in-suite or on private terrace: Greek yoghurt from Roussos farm, thyme honey from Pyrgos, pastries delivered each morning from Melitini bakery. Room service covers lunches and light dinners until 10pm, short menu of Mediterranean dishes prepared in a central kitchen. For dining, walk down to Oia: Roka, Karma, Lauda less than 400 metres away.
