“Rooftop with pool facing the Vieux-Port and Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde, open from April to October.”
L'InterContinental Marseille - Hotel Dieu occupies the former hospital built in 1753 on place Daviel, facing the port. We sleep in rooms where stone vaults coexist with Cassina furniture and white marble bathrooms. The rooftop with pool offers a direct view over the Vieux-Port and the Bonne Mère, rare at this altitude in the centre. The 1 000 m² spa carves its cabins into the old vaulted rooms, subdued light and exposed stone. The Les Fenêtres table proposes Mediterranean cuisine signed by Lionel Levy, produce from the morning's fish market. From 302 € per night, it is the only historic palace on the Vieux-Port. We recommend it for the address and the architecture, the IHG service remains professional without being warm ✨
Who is it for?
Who we recommend it to
We recommend the InterContinental to travellers seeking a historic palace without leaving the centre of Marseille, couples on a luxury weekend or business clients who want to avoid anonymous chain hotels. The rooftop draws a thirtysomething clientele in summer, the rooms suit families with children thanks to the connecting suites. Architecture enthusiasts find their match, the building alone justifies the booking.
The building
Architecture and interiors
The Hôtel-Dieu de Marseille was built between 1753 and 1866 to plans by Jacques Hardouin-Mansart de Sagonne, great-great-nephew of Jules Hardouin-Mansart. The neoclassical façade looks onto place Daviel, the wings frame a paved inner courtyard. Conversion into a hotel completed in 2013 by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte: stone vaults preserved, ceiling heights of 4 metres, contemporary Cassina and Poltrona Frau furniture. The 194 rooms occupy the former treatment wards, some with port view, others onto the courtyard.

The Capian bar offers cocktails and tapas facing the port, terrace open from April to October. Breakfast buffet served under the vaults, correct without being memorable, 35 € per person.
